South Carolina State Bulldogs

The South Carolina State Bulldogs aren’t a school many college football betting fans talk about but they enter 2010 as the defending MEAC champions. They’re happy to return star quarterback Malcolm Long, who was their heart and soul last year, accounting for 25 total touchdowns.

But Long won’t have much help considering South Carolina State’s starting running back and receivers all graduated this offseason.

South Carolina’s “D” was strong last year, picking off 18 passes, but it lost some starters too. Worse yet, the Bulldogs have gotten their tails kicked historically against BCS opponents. In 2009, they lost to South Carolina 38-14 – and this was a Bulldogs team that allowed fewer than 16 points per game.

In 2008 Clemson blew them out 54-0; they fell 38-2 to South Carolina in 2007. You get the idea. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Georgia Tech bid farewell to Derrick Morgan and Jonathan Dwyer but still hopes to repeat as ACC champion this season. The wild, run-heavy triple option offense averaged 420-plus yards per game last season and remains in good hands with Josh Nesbitt at quarterback.

At first glance, his 1,701 passing yards and 10 touchdowns last year look pedestrian.

But look at his rushing stats: 1,037 yards and 18 touchdowns on 279 carries. Georgia Tech knows how to use him.

Georgia Tech could stumble at times defensively this season. Losing Morgan to the NFL really stings and the Jackets will convert to at 3-4 defense under Al Groh this year; that’s never an easy scheme transition.

The pick:

Georgia Tech will be a massive favorite in this matchup and deservedly so. South Carolina State does a fine job in its own conference but it flops predictably every time it battles one of the big boys.

We should expect nothing less than a beating this weekend – especially with so many important cogs gone from the Bulldogs’ lineup on both sides of the ball.

Look for Georgia Tech to dominate early and often before eventually resting its starters. Watch for new starting back Anthony Allen to get an extended look.
