Purdue at Notre Dame Week One Preview

Purdue

I truly think the Purdue Boilermakers have a chance to surprise quite a few people this year. Danny Hope seems to be the type of coach that Purdue needs, and this team has more talent than most people realize. The team was just 5-7 last year, but at least two or three of those losses were games the Boilermakers had a real shot at winning.

If they can simply reduce their mistakes and play fundamental football, they’ll jump in the standings.

Robert Marve is taking over at quarterback for the Boilermakers, and while he is a bit of an unknown at the college level, he was a very highly touted recruit and should be able to run this offense well. Keith Smith is one the Big Ten’s better wide receiver and he will provide Marve with a consistent receiver to look for on third down. The backfield looks solid as well with McBurse and Siller looking like they will get the majority of the carries.

The Purdue defense was put in a bad spot quite often last year because of turnovers, but they are a decent unit. The front seven are impressive, and I expect the Boilermakers to rush the quarterback and stop the run well. If there is one area where this team is suspect it is in the secondary.

It will be up to the front seven to create pressure on the opposing quarterbacks or Purdue will probably give up a lot of passing yards. College Football

Notre Dame

Notre Dame has a new coach in Brian Kelly. Kelly has done a magnificent job at both Central Michigan and Cincinnati, so the expectations are high for him here at Notre Dame. The loss of Jimmy Clausen leaves a big hole at the quarterback spot, but there is still quite a bit of talent in South Bend for Kelly to work with.

Dayne Crist looks set to be the starting quarterback for Notre Dame in 2010. Crist is a dual-threat type of player, but he did injure his knee last year, so there are some concerns about his mobility. The good news for him and the rest of the offense is they have an impressive talent in the backfield in the form of Armando Allen. Allen’s backups are all very talented as well, so expect the Fighting Irish to have a solid running game this year.

The Notre Dame defense held the team back a little bit in 2009 by allowing more than 26 points per game. The team will switch over to a 3-4 defense because of their depth at linebacker this year. The team looks ready to get more pressure on the quarterback as their outside rushers are all very quick.

The secondary is the weakest spot for Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are not deep at all at the cornerback position, with only four cornerbacks on scholarship this year.

There is little doubt Brian Kelly and his great staff will get this team turned in the right direction, but just how quickly will that happen? That is the million dollar question right now in South Bend!

College Football Gambling Trends

Purdue is 1-4 SU in its last 5 games when playing Notre Dame
Purdue is 2-11 SU in its last 13 games on the road
Notre Dame is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing at home against Purdue
Notre Dame is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games when playing Purdue
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Notre Dame’s last 6 games
Notre Dame is 10-5 SU in its last 15 games at home
Purdue is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games
Purdue is 7-14 SU in its last 21 games

The Pick:

I’m not sure Notre Dame will be that great at this point in the season so I wouldn’t really want to lay the points, but I’m not confident enough in Purdue to play the dog either.

I think the better play here is to just take the under 54.5 and expect both offenses to be a little out of sync in their first game of the year.

Purdue vs. Notre Dame Score Prediction: Notre Dame 30 Purdue 20
