Wisconsin

You could make a solid argument that Wisconsin is playing as well as anyone in college football of late. The Badgers offense is firing on all cylinders, and the defense has performed much better than expected. They look to notch a big Rose Bowl win this weekend.

The Wisconsin offense is all about their amazing running game. Wisconsin may have the best offensive line in football, and they have three extremely talented running backs. James White, John Clay, and Montee Ball are all terrific and they have different running styles, which can make adjustments tough on the defense. Wisconsin averaged 249 yards per game on the ground this year, and they ran the ball well against some terrific defenses this year. Scott Tolzien is the perfect quarterback for this offense. Tolzien is a smart quarterback who takes care of the football and completes a high percentage of his passes. Tolzien completed 74% of his passes this year. Lance Kendricks is his favorite target, and Kendricks is one of the best tight ends in the country. This offense has been stellar all season long, and they average 43.3 points per game.

The Wisconsin defense lost their star, Chris Borland, early in the year. Most people thought it would mean this unit couldn’t produce well enough, but they have been surprisingly good. One of the primary reasons for their success is the emergence of J.J. Watt as one of the best defensive linemen in the nation. The defense allowed just 20.5 points per game this year.

TCU

Gary Patterson’s TCU Horned Frogs went undefeated during the regular season again this year. This team was beaten by Boise State last year in a BCS game, and they are out to prove that game was a fluke. This team is definitely highly motivated for the Rose Bowl.

Andy Dalton is the senior leader at quarterback for the Horned Frogs. It may surprise people to hear this, but TCU actually averaged more yards per game on the ground than Wisconsin this year. TCU ran for 260.5 yards per game this season, and they have plenty of depth in the backfield as well. Ed Wesley and Matthew Tucker see most of the carries, but Dalton is also a good runner and provides another rushing threat in the backfield at all times. TCU had 39 rushing touchdowns this year. Jeremy Kerley is the main target on the outside, but Josh Boyce has emerged as a deep threat for this passing attack. Amazingly, TCU averages 43.4 points per game, which is one tenth of a point higher than the Badgers.

While TCU has a very good offense, it is the defense that leads the way for this team. This unit ranked first in the nation in yards per game allowed, passing yards per game allowed, and points per game allowed. My favorite statistic on this defense is their prowess on third down. Opponents are converting just 21.9% on their third down conversion attempts, which is a remarkably low number. This defense has both strength and quickness, but this will be the best offensive line they have played all year. The TCU defense allowed just 11.4 points per game this season.

The Pick:

I really believe this is probably the best bowl matchup of the season. I think these teams match up very evenly, and this one will be a battle down to the finish. Since I believe the game is a tossup, I’ll take the three points with the Badgers here.

Wisconsin vs. TCU Score Prediction: Wisconsin 31 TCU 28
