Missouri

Gary Pinkel and the Missouri Tigers had another successful regular season. The team went 10-2 and they are currently ranked 12th in the nation. If they are able to win this game, they may finish in the top ten.

The offense is led by star quarterback Blaine Gabbert. Gabbert threw for 2,752 yards and 15 touchdowns this year, while getting picked off just seven times. He is also a mobile quarterback who can beat you with his legs. The Tigers have a bit of a tailback by committee type of system and it has worked out well for them. De’Vion Moore, Henry Josey, and Kendial Lawrence are all averaging more than five yards per carry this year. The offense is extremely balanced, which has helped them average 30.3 points per game over the course of the season.

The Missouri defense has been the biggest reason this team is 10-2 this year. The Tigers have one of the best pass rushes in all of college football. They have sacked the opposing quarterback 38 times this year. This unit is solid against both the run and the pass, but the reason they are terrific is they are great in the red zone. Opponents usually either turn the ball over or settle for a field goal against this quality defense.

Iowa

The Iowa Hawkeyes were one of the biggest disappointments of the year. This was a team that was expected to finish in the top ten in the nation and contend for a Big Ten title. The Hawkeyes lost their last three games and finished just 7-5 in the regular season.

Ricky Stanzi had a superb year for the Iowa offense. Stanzi’s numbers are among the best in the nation at the quarterback position. He threw 25 touchdown passes and was intercepted only four times. Stanzi’s 65% completion rate was easily the best of his career as well. The bad news for Iowa is Stanzi’s big play receiver won’t be available for this game. Derrell Johnson-Koulianos has been dismissed from the team after facing drug charges. Marvin McNutt will need to shoulder more of the load. If losing the big play receiver wasn’t enough, Iowa also will be without their leading rusher. Adam Robinson has been suspended for the game because he broke team policies. Marcus Coker will likely get most of the carries for the Hawkeyes in this game.

The Iowa defense is very good, but they let this team down in some key situations this year. You won’t find a more talented defensive line than this one. The Hawkeyes rank fifth in the nation in rushing yards allowed per game at 99. The pass defense is a little shakier, and they have had trouble with some quality quarterbacks. Expect the defensive line to get after the quarterback and stuff the run in this one. They key will be whether Iowa can contain the Missouri passing game.

The Pick:

Iowa is a team with much more talent than their record would show, but missing two of their stars on offense will hurt. Both defenses are solid and I believe the under is the best play on the board in this one.
