Team records:
Middle Tennessee: 9-3 SU, 9-3 ATS
Southern Miss: 7-5 SU, 6-5 ATS

Preview:

With Brett Favre, Southern Mississippi’s most famous football alum, having an MVP-calibre season for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings, maybe some of that karma will rub off on the Eagles in a runaway win?

Taking a slightly more calculated look at the match-up, however, shows that this could indeed be a close one.

Conference USA’s Southern Miss played in this bowl last season, edging Troy in overtime, 30-27. The Eagles will also have two potent offensive weapons to inflict on the Raiders in RB Damion Fletcher and WR DeAndre Brown. Fletcher is the NCAA’s active yardage leader and is a young man with the reputation of erupting in bowl games (this author remembers a 200 total yard effort vs. Cincy in 2007’s Papajohns.com Bowl).

Brown is a 6″6, 230 lb athletic freak and while he’s only a sophomore, when he plays well he looks like a taller Andre Johnson. If Eagles QB Martevious Young can get these two the ball mistake-free, Southern Miss will be able to throw up points on the Sun Belt conference representative.

While Middle Tennessee also has some impressive stats, they play in an inferior conference. The only really impressive wins to its name this season are a one-point win against lowly ACC opponent Maryland and a touchdown win vs. Florida Atlantic. Raiders QB Dwight Dasher is ninth in the FBS in total offense (298.3 ypg) but this is also in the fairly miserable Sun Belt.

For these reasons, I like Southern Miss in a game that shouldn’t be a blow-out, at any rate.
