Mountain West Football Previews: New Mexico

Head Coach: Mike Locksley
2009 Record: 1-11

Colorado St. Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +600000

To say that the 2009 season did not go well for New Mexico is a major understatement. The Lobos were bad at everything last year. The offense ranked last in the Mountain West by scoring 16 points per game. The defense ranked last in the Mountain West by allowing 36 points per game. There really isn’t any way to spin those numbers or the 1-11 record in a positive manner. Mike Locksley hasn’t gotten it done on the field and some off the field issues have just added fuel to the fire.

If the Lobos don’t improve soon, Locksley won’t be at New Mexico for long.

The team is making it their goal to be able to establish the run this year. That is certainly a start, but with all the issues they have there are going to have to be a ton of changes in Albuquerque.

Team Strengths:

The defensive line is actually quite strong for New Mexico. Last year it was the single best unit for the team. Calvin Smith is a defensive lineman that chose New Mexico over some other big schools, and he could add to their depth on the line this year.

The running game should get a boost from solid depth in the backfield. The Lobos have at least four guys who will likely see playing time at the tailback spot.

While the rest of the linebackers aren’t very impressive, Carmen Messina led all of college football in tackles last year with 163. He will be a force again this year.

Team Weaknesses:

There are plenty of weaknesses to choose from on this team, but none are more glaring than the passing game as a whole. The team hasn’t decided on a quarterback as of yet, and they are sure to have someone with little experience under center. At the same time, two of their three leading wide receivers are gone and the team will be short on talent at this spot.

The defensive secondary is bad. Their starting safeties from a year ago are both gone and two newcomers will likely start in those positions. The passing defense was 105th in the nation last year, and I don’t think that will improve any this season.

If the total offense and total defense isn’t bad enough, this is a team that has serious trouble turning over the football. In 2009, the Lobos ranked 102nd in the nation in turnover margin.

2010-2011 New Mexico Lobos Football Predictions: 1-11

I just don’t see anything about this team that inspires me to pick them to win any more than one or two games at the most. The offense will be bad and the defense may be better against the run, but the secondary will likely get torched. This team needs to win against New Mexico State on October 9th.

Expect another long year if you are a New Mexico football fan.

Odds of the Lobos going 0-12 are huge. Even the expected win at NMSU will be difficult as NMSU is much improved from last season. Should the Lobos start off 0-6, the fans will start searching for a new head coach. Considering UNM paid Locksley $700k a year, they’ll most likely have to shell out well over that just to hire a new coach to stop the bleeding. And the schedule gets even tougher next year for Locksley and Co., so don’t expect to see more than 3 wins in 2011.
