You shouldn’t need a nuclear scientist to break down our first game of the 2009 bowl season. Fresno State running back Ryan Mathews is leading the nation is rush yards per game (151.3 ypg) and the Cowboys are 91st in the nation in rush defense.

There’s no reason the Bulldogs won’t chew yards up on the ground and, accordingly, chew the clock in their favor. Behind solid blockers like C Joe Bernardi and RG Andrew Jackson, Fresno should overwhelm Wyoming at the line of scrimmage and hence, Mathews will add to his totals.
Wyoming is decent on special teams – both with punting and punt returns – but they’d have to play the best field position game of all time to pull this upset.
While Fresno is not a defensive juggernaut, the Cowboys offense scares no one (112th in the nation, ouch) and they finished 6-6 in the Mountain West.
It’s great to see Wyoming back in a bowl game (its first since the 2004 Las Vegas Bowl) but that unfortunately is where the praise ends for first-year coach Dave Christensen’s team. Look for Fresno State to win the New Mexico Bowl without much difficulty.
