Independant Team Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Navy Midshipmen

Coach: Ken Niumatalolo
2009 Record: 10-4

Navy Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +5000

The Naval Academy just seems to be one of those teams that motors along using its own brand of quirky, 1940s-style football. Its undersized players get the job done for a perennial decent season and bowl berth. So steady are the Middies, in fact, that they signed a bowl agreement with the Poinsettia Bowl through 2013.

Again in 2010, Coach Niumatalolo (throw that one in the annual Spelling Bee final) has the players he needs in the backfield to move the ball and hoard some W’s.

Senior pivot Ricky Dobbs should have a fantastic season and could even be a Heisman Trophy darkhorse.

Team Strengths:

Dobbs, senior Vince Murray and junior Marcus Curry will march the Middies down the gridiron in their trademark style. Dobbs also did enough through the air to keep people honest, tossing for over 1,000 yards in 2009.

The defensive secondary is infused by senior Wyatt Middleton, who had 68 tackles and four INTs last season and should play a more pivotal role this time around.

Linebacker Tyler Simmons and D-lineman Jabaree Tuani also stand out among Navy’s defenders.

Team Weaknesses:

Hypothetically, a good team with speed and strength ought to be able to overpower Navy’s diminutive players. However, the Middies play crafty and tend to play up to their competition.

There are not many returning starters in the defensive front seven and the team will miss remarkable linebacker Ross Pospisil, who led the team with 107 tackles and four sacks last season.

2010-2011 Navy Football Prediction: 11-3

Ricky Dobbs should be legitimately electric in 2010, and has enough experience up and down the roster to handle Navy’s schedule. The Middies have no truly threatening road games, other than the intriguing match-up against Notre Dame at new Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.

The Middies also play Maryland in Baltimore to open the season on Sept. 6, but it’s quite possible the Middies emerge victorious there.

If Navy gets a couple breaks and Dobbs doesn’t disappoint, it’s entirely possible the Middies have another double-digit win season.
