College football betting rages into Week 3 and Notre Dame is the focus this time. Sure, the Irish’s loss to Michigan at the Big House was devastating since they blew a lead, but maybe it was a good thing. People were going a bit crazy projecting Notre Dame to be a BCS contender; the Irish are good, but not that good. The loss probably knocks them out of the title discussion and may take the pressure off Jimmy Claussen and company.

Let’s make a pick for this week’s home game.

Michigan State Spartans vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Saturday, September 19, 3:30 p.m. ET

Online betting favorite: Notre Dame -10

Notre Dame shouldn’t have too much trouble scoring points this week. Does Charlie Weis make some questionable calls, at times relying too much on the passing game? Maybe, but it’s hard to blame him considering how many weapons Notre Dame has in the passing game. Claussen has as good a group of receivers at his disposal as any quarterback in the league.

In fact, the Irish passing game could totally terrorize Michigan State if betting software projections are correct. The Spartans don’t pressure the quarterback well so Claussen should have all day to throw. If Dan LeFevour of Central Michigan can torch the Spartans for 326 yards, Claussen should have a field day.

If and when Michigan State falls behind, it will struggle to make up ground. The offensive line is in shambles with center Joel Nitchman battling injury and right guard J’Michael Deane battling injury. The depleted line is struggling to open up holes for the power running attack. Caulton Ray and the running back corps averaged just 3.4 yards per carry against Central Michigan last week.
The Irish don’t have a formidable defense but should get a boost playing in front of their home fans, so they’ll penetrate Michigan State’s depleted O-line. Since the Spartans won’t score and should get scored on a ton, Notre Dame should cover the 10-point spread easily.
