2010 NCAA football season picks – MWC

The smaller college football conferences need love too. And never has that been clearer than over the past two seasons, when TCU, Utah and BYU all exploded into relevancy. Will they be back strong in 2010 or will yet another upstart school make noise? Here’s how I expect it to play out.

MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE

1. TCU (BCS Odds +1500)
2. Utah (BCS Odds +10000)
3. Air Force
4. Wyoming
5. BYU (BCS Odds +30000)
6. San Diego state
7. New Mexico
8. Colorado State
9. UNLV

It definitely still seems like the MWC is TCU’s to lose. The Horned Frogs were college football’s Rodney Dangerfield last season; they were a dominant force yet didn’t get enough respect to wind up in the BCS title game. Their “D” was tops in the nation in yards allowed last year. Even if you think that number reflects playing in a weak conference, guess what?

They still play in that conference. So TCU could stymie opponents. Again. They have Andy Dalton back behind center with a good line that returns four starters.

Utah hopes to make one last emphatic statement before it bolts for the Pac-10, where it believes it can keep up with the stiffer competition. The Utes should score enough to be competitive, as Jordan Wynn works behind an experienced line and Eddie Whide is pretty dynamic in the backfield.

But Utah’s defense is decimated. Zero linebackers return and the secondary is shaky too.

Air Force is the opposite of Utah; its offense may be its downfall. The triple option is always fun and Tim Jefferson is capable but he doesn’t have much experience around him to support him and make plays.

Air Force’s defense is strong, however; it was fifth in the nation against the past last year.

What about Wyoming? No one takes the Cowboys seriously but they have an exciting quarterback who runs well in Austin Carta-Samuels.

If their defense holds up, they could rise as high as third.

BYU is in for the biggest disappointment. The Cougars were a joy to watch last season when they went 11-2 and beat both Oklahoma and Oregon State. But all their offensive skill players have been replaced.

We just don’t know this team anymore.

Hypothetical (Wink) MWC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: TCU 41, Utah 17
