Big 12 Football Previews: Missouri

Head Coach: Gary Pinkel
2009 Record: 8-5

Missouri Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

Gary Pinkel and the Missouri Tigers did not finish the season the way they wanted to in 2009. Early in the season they were a top 25 team, but they lost their bowl game 35-13 against Navy.

The Missouri team has been quite competitive under Pinkel, but they are just 7-23 against ranked teams in his tenure. The 2010 version will look different than the 2009 team in several spots, but there is quite a bit of talent on this team.

They certainly have the potential to finish in the top 25 this season.

The loss of Danario Alexander at the wide receiver spot and Sean Witherspoon at the linebacker spot will be tough to deal with, as both were All American players. Missouri has some solid depth in most areas, and they will be a force to be reckoned with in the weak Big 12 North. Sportsbook.com

Team Strengths:

Blaine Gabbert is certainly one of the best quarterbacks in the Big 12. Last year Gabbert was hampered by a constant ankle injury, but still put up good numbers. Gabbert has the ability to run, but his strong arm and good decision making set him apart. He will help the Tigers in a big way this year.

The running game should also be a nice strength because of a strong offensive line and plenty of talent in the backfield. Senior Derrick Washington had a bit of an off season last year, but he is super talented and can hurt a defense in many ways. De’Vion Moore and Kendial Lawrence are also good backs that should contribute.

The defensive line is strong for this Tigers football team.

Aldon Smith will get into the backfield consistently and nose tackle Dominique Hamilton should do a good job clogging up the middle.

Team Weaknesses:

The defensive secondary is a real issue for the Missouri Tigers. This team was chewed up by good quarterbacks last year, and I see no reason to believe the same won’t happen again. In 2009 they ranked 104th in pass defense and I figure they will rank poorly again this season.

The receivers have some talent, but they are all pretty raw at this point. Alexander will be missed in a big way. Gabbert is the type of quarterback who can light up defenses with his arm, but he’ll need to have some reliable receivers.

2010-2011 Missouri Football Predictions: 9-4

The Missouri Tigers will be the only real competition for Nebraska in the Big 12 North, but I just don’t think they’ll be able to win in Lincoln. Missouri’s out of conference schedule couldn’t possibly be any easier, and a 5-0 start appears extremely likely. Keep a close eye on their games at Texas Tech and at Texas A&M.

These should both be hard fought battles that go down to the wire.

I think Missouri improves a bit this year and finishes right around the bottom edge of the top 25.
