WAC 2010-2011 Football Previews: Miami Hurricanes

Coach: Randy Shannon
2009 Record: 9-4

Miami Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +2000

The shine has been off the apple of the Hurricanes’ football program in recent years. They seemed to be turning the corner in 2009, however, with the progression of young QB Jacory Harris.

Coach Randy Shannon is extremely adept at recruiting top local talent in south Florida at the fruits of his labors are manifest in a stacked defense and receiving corps.

‘The U’ has a nice balance of talented youth and veteran experience on both sides of the ball. Harris is back and should be one of the ACC’s best, matched only perhaps by rival Florida State’s Christian Ponder.

Depth is a concern if injuries plague Miami, but if it gets lucky the ’Canes have a great shot at winning the Coastal division.

Team Strengths:

Wide receiver is a position chock full of size, athleticism and pedigree. It should be a treat for Harris to throw the ball this season. Players like senior Leonard Hankerson and junior Aldarius Johnson are true to the lineage of stars like Michael Irvin, Reggie Wayne and Andre Johnson.

Junior Travis Benjamin adds a needed dose of speed. MLB Colin McCarthy, the leader of the defense, is also back as a senior. Sophomore DT Marcus Forston and safety Ray-Ray Armstrong were among the best in America at their positions coming out of high school.

Junior CB Brandon Harris is also a stud.

Team Weaknesses:

Left tackle Orlando Franklin and guard Joel Figueroa represent the only experience returning on the offensive line. The defense loses its ’09 leading tackler in linebacker Darryl Sharpton, and QB Harris must throw fewer picks (a 24-17 ratio last year).

The two leading RBs from last season are compromised; Javarris James from graduation and Graig Cooper from a knee injury.

2010-2011 Miami Football Prediction: 11-2

Miami has a really tough game Sept. 11 at Ohio State, but get Florida State and Virginia Tech at home. If Harris continues to improve and the offensive line gels, the Hurricanes will be a tough customer indeed. Expect the best season yet under Coach Shannon.

In terms of total ACC supremacy, though, Florida State and V-Tech also look menacing.
