Larry Porter’s first season on the job at Memphis was a miserable one. The Tigers went 1-11 and they were abysmal in every aspect of the game.

Memphis finished with the 119th ranked scoring offense and 117th ranked scoring defense in all of college football. To be fair, Porter didn’t have much at all to work, and it will take several years to see if Porter is successful in turning the program around.

Probably the most concerning statistic of all from last year is that Memphis ranked 118th out of 120 teams in turnover margin. While these players may not be five star recruits, they should be able to take better care of the football. Can Memphis get anything going in the right direction in 2011?

Team Strengths:

Frank Trotter leads a defensive line that should be much improved from a year ago. Memphis returns seven defensive linemen that have at least one start in their career. Memphis allowed 4.4 yards per carry last year, but the strength of this team should be the defensive line this season.

The Memphis Tigers broke in a lot of new wide receivers last year, but this year they’ll have quite a few talented veterans on the outside. Marcus Rucker and Curtis Johnson both have the potential to make big plays.

Team Weaknesses:

Honestly, this team has weaknesses all over the field right now. Porter is doing a pretty good job recruiting, but the next year or two will likely be very tough for Memphis. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The biggest weakness last year was the secondary, and I expect that to be the case again in 2011. Memphis allowed opponents to complete an absurd 65.6% of their passes. Memphis has brought in some talented youngsters to play the secondary, but I expect them to struggle in the pass happy Conference USA in their first season.

Ryan Williams was expected to be the starter at quarterback for the Tigers, but he transferred at the beginning of spring. Williams left the program to enroll at Miami. Memphis is now left wondering who will be the starting quarterback in 2011. Andy Summerlin seems to have the highest upside, but I expect whoever starts here to have a long season.

The offensive line was terrible in 2010, and it will be even more inexperienced this year. The line paved the way for Memphis to average only 2.9 yards per carry last season. They also allowed 37 sacks. This unit lost four starters from last year and they are going to rely on youngsters and junior college transfers this year.

2011-2012 Memphis Football Prediction: 2-10

The Memphis Tigers have the least talent of any team in the conference. Coach Porter is great at getting this team to give it their best effort each time out, so I think they’ll manage a couple wins. The Tigers lost a lot of close games in 2010, and the key to winning a game or two more will be taking care of the football. This team really needs some of its youngsters to step up and provide a big boost in 2011. With tons of question marks and no real stars, Memphis is in for a long season.
