ACC Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: UM Terrapins

Coach: Ralph Friedgen
2009 Record: 2-10

Maryland Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

Injuries and inconsistency led to a drastic step backwards for the Maryland football program last season; the Terps had one victory over Clemson (the only one worth writing home about) and needed OT to beat lowly FCS opponent James Madison.

Ralph Friedgen is certainly on the coach’s hot seat, but he could turn the boiling fury down to a simmer with a strong 2010 campaign. It’s easy to improve after a paltry two win season, but the Terps should be quite a bit better this year.

They better be, or we will be talking about Friedgen in the past tense before long.

Team Strengths:

Senior RB Da’Rel Scott was injured last year, breaking his wrist part-way through the season. He still led the team in rushing and averaged five yards per carry. If the wrist holds up and he can stay healthy otherwise, Scott should have an all-conference type season.

Junior wide-out Torrey Smith is also a genuine threat as both a receiver and a kick returner. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

On defense, Maryland always seems to have an annual bundle of awesome athletes whom are destined for the NFL. In 2010 the short list includes senior LBs Alex Wujciak and Adrien Moten and DBs Kenny Tate and USC transfer Antwine Perez.

In general, the Maryland back seven should be extremely quick and be able to gamble and make eye-popping – and helmet-popping – plays.

Team Weaknesses:

Last year’s veteran quarterback Chris Turner left as the team’s second-leading all-time passer. He will likely be replaced by junior Jamarr Robinson, who is somewhat of a wildcard. The offense also brings in Miami-Oh transfer Clay Belton, but the quarterback position is anything but surefire this season.

There is more continuity on the offensive line in 2010, but it is still a young unit with some question marks. By next year, the O-line might upgrade from a weakness to a strength.

2010-2011 Maryland Football Prediction: 6-6

Last season was the perfect storm of injuries, iffy play and inexperience for the Terps. There is no doubt they will play better this season, especially because Maryland draws unspectacular Duke and Virginia from the ACC Coastal division.

This may not be a bowl team, but Maryland will be competitive and Scott should be shredding defenses this autumn.
