Conference USA Football Previews: Marshall
Head Coach: Doc Holliday
2009 Record: 7-6

The Thundering Herd will be starting a new era with Doc Holliday at the helm in 2010. It wasn’t that the program was having terrible years under Mark Snyder, but the mediocrity just wasn’t acceptable at Marshall.
Under the direction of Holliday they will look to rise back to the top of Conference USA.

The beginning of the season will be difficult for Marshall, as the travel to Ohio State, and then face in-state rival West Virginia. Even inside their conference, the schedule is much tougher at the start of the season than it will be going down the stretch.
Basically, this team will need to get its act together quickly if it expects to contend in 2010.
Team Strengths:
The offensive line is a veteran group that should be one of the best in the league. They are adept at both blocking in the running game and protecting the quarterback. Center Chad Schofield leads the way for this unit.
The receiving corps is strong, both at wide receiver and at the tight end position. Antavious Wilson is a star, and Aaron Dobson is a big play type of receiver. At the tight end, Lee Smith is a great possession receiver who will help move the chains consistently.
The linebackers are the clear strength of the defense. Mario Harvey is one of the better linebackers in the nation, and he stuffs the run better than anyone in the league. Kellen Harris is also coming along nicely and should compliment Harvey extremely well.
Team Weaknesses:
The Thundering Herd are weak in the secondary. The pass defense ranked 90th in the nation last year and allowed 513 passing yards against UTEP in their final regular season game. The corners tend to get beat deep too often. The safeties need to work on keeping the play in front of them as well.
The offense has had a ton of trouble finishing off drives. Last year it was a recurring problem for Marshall that they had to settle for field goals far too often. Once they get into the red zone they need to convert and get into the end zone.
The defensive line needs to do a better job pressuring the quarterback. The secondary is a weakness, but the line doesn’t help by giving the opposing quarterback far too much time to survey the field.
2010-2011 Marshall Thundering Herd Football Predictions: 8-5
Marshall looks to me like a team that should definitely be improved from a year ago. If they settle in on a quarterback and get solid production there, this team could be dangerous.
The pass defense must hold its own, because they will play several teams who like to air it out. They key part of the schedule is likely to be their games at Southern Miss on October 2nd and home against UCF on October 13th.
Both of these teams will be contenders and these are the teams the Thundering Herd must beat to contend for the league title. Expect a successful first year for Holliday in Huntington.
