SEC Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: LSU Tigers

Coach: Les Miles
2009 Record: 9-4

LSU Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +4000

For several years, Louisiana State was right up there with USC for routinely bringing in and pumping out the best talent in America. Coach Miles still recruits a very impressive short-list of players, but other teams have gotten better around LSU – especially in the SEC West division.

Despite the hordes of talent, the Tigers only bring back 10 returning starters, though they are in the crucial spots.

There will be the usual glut of hype defenders ramping up Baton Rouge, and sophomore Russell Shepard, the top quarterback prospect a couple seasons ago, brings dynamism to the receiver corps after a position change in ’09.

Team Strengths:

The typical crew of NFL-bound players exist on defense, highlighted by CB Patrick Peterson, Mike ’backer Kelvin Sheppard and DT Drake Nevis. Undersized senior tackle Lazarius Levingston is no slouch, either. The Tigers break in a lot of new faces, but of course they are highly-touted athletes.

Shepard is probably the best weapon in the passing game, but senior WR Terrance Toliver and soph Reuben Randle will buttress the attack.

The quarterback position has had a little revolving door syndrome in recent years, but with junior Jordan Jefferson, the Tigers finally have some continuity.

Team Weaknesses:

The backfield loses its top two rushers; the returning rushing leader is WR Shepard. LSU generally has talent in this spot, it is crucial for this team not to be one-dimensional in a tricky division.

Kelvin Sheppard is the only returning player in the linebacker corps – juniors Ryan Baker and Stefoin Francois must dry behind their ears, quickly.

2010-2011 LSU Football Prediction: 8-5

LSU must contend with the Crimson Tide, a vastly-improved Auburn squad and the Ryan Mallett-led Arkansas Razorbacks in the SEC West. Every week will be a struggle, though there is a generous heaping of talent at Miles’ disposal. LSU has Florida, Auburn and Arkansas on the road.

If the Tigers win one of those games, they are in decent shape; if they win two, 2010 is basically a tour-de-force.

They definitely have a tough schedule as they do every year. I understand why Les Miles is on the hot seat, but at the same time I would be afraid that the next coach won’t be as good as Les anyways.

They have an experienced quarterback and will fill their positions with plenty of talent they have. I have a feeling people are sleeping too much on LSU this year. Their defense will be very good again led by the best cornerback in the country. I wouldn’t be surprised what their record was – including a BCS game.
