Big East Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Louisville Cardinals

Coach: Charlie Strong
2009 Record: 4-8

Louisville Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

Much like Syracuse, Louisville football alumni are of a high pedigree, yet those happy vibes left town some time ago (2006, to be exact, when the Cardinals made the Orange Bowl).

Johnny Unitas, Brian Brohm and Chris Redman aren’t going to bail this 2010 edition out, so new coach Charlie Strong must squeeze the maximum out of a limping program.

The Cardinals are not without a few highly-touted, intriguing players, yet the sum total of what takes the field this season probably translates into a basement finish in the Big East.

Team Strengths:

Strong will deploy an effective running back committee in Victor Anderson, Bilal Powell and Darius Ashley. Powell and Anderson in particular comprise a nice thunder/lightning combo.

Junior WR Josh Chichester looks like he should be playing power forward in the NBA instead of being on the gridiron (6”9, 250 lbs!) but the jury is out as to whether or not he can produce. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The best on a fairly miserable defensive unit is Will ’backer Brandon Heath, who at least shows an affinity for disturbing things in the backfield.

Team Weaknesses:

Quarterback Adam Froman has nice size and was an accomplished junior college player a couple years ago, but he played lousy last season and might be replaced by one of Strong’s new recruits. It goes without saying that this is not a position where you want head-scratching.

Also, the defensive line will not blow anybody away and the Cardinals get the pleasure of breaking in a green special teams unit.

Punter Jon Payne is a senior, but he’s been a career backup to this point.

2010-2011 Louisville Football Prediction: 3-9

Strong must live up to his surname in what should be a trying 2010 in Louisville. The team must adjust to the new schemes and must exceed expectations at crucial positions in order to have success.

There are a few games on the schedule Louisville can take (Eastern Kentucky, Arkansas State, Memphis) but with all the other contenders out there, rebuilding Louisville is likely a pin cushion in the Big East conference.

Sincere apologies to Johnny U, of course.
