When starting quarterback Ross Jenkins went down in the first game of the season in 2010, the year looked lost for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs; and it was, for the most part.

What came out of the injury, no one could of expected. Sophomore Colby Cameron came into take Jenkins’ place in that game, and led the team to a thrilling 20-6 win over Grambling State.

That game wouldn’t be a sign of Cameron’s future success though, as the team lost the next two with their spanking new quarterback at the reins, but that season is now a wash, and Cameron will have a chance to show that he is more than how he performed in those few games.

The team, overall, is in a transition phase, but should be able to come out swinging in head coach Sonny Dykes’ second season.

Let’s take a look at how the Bulldogs will stack up on both sides of the ball, and where they will finish in the race for the WAC title in 2011.

Offense:

Under the watchful eyes of both the Tech fans and alumni, Cameron will look to rebound to mimic his performance of his 2010 debut, taking over at the quarterback position from a graduating Jenkins.

Cameron will have a lot on his shoulders, but will have a strong supporting cast around him that will help him succeed, starting with running back Lennon Creer who will return for his senior season; his second as a starter.

Creer rushed for 1,181 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2010, and will only get better in 2011 as the running game looks to be even more dominant though this coming season, as the team retains every starter along the offensive line, Thus having one of the most important thing in the game of football: clock control.

Cameron’s receiving squad is a different animal all together, and doesn’t have a clear-cut number-one option, but does have a lot of players that should contribute enough to keep the opposing team’s defenses guessing.

The Bulldogs’ system prides itself on spreading the ball around, so the lack of a standout in the receiving corps shouldn’t be a big issue.

Defense:

The defense failed to hold its own in 2010, ranking 90th in nation in points allowed. But this year, will have a lot of returning starters, which will only help their consistency. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Senior linebacker Jay Dudley is the leader on the defense, amassing 94 tackles in 2010 en route to WAC second-team all American honors.

Dudley will have the help of junior safety Chad Boyd behind him, who is known for his knack for being around the ball.

Boyd finished his sophomore season with 80 tackles and four interceptions, and is sure to reach another level in his junior year.

The defense is well rounded in the front seven as well as the secondary, and the players know the system and run it well.

This year, the Bulldogs have the pieces in place to compete for a WAC title, but are clearly not the team to beat.

2011 Louisiana Tech Prediction: 4th WAC –

This team is on the cusp of something great, but teams like Nevada will hold them back. It also doesn’t help that they have a tough schedule down the stretch, which could push them out of contention long before the season is finished.
