Sun Belt Conference Football Previews: Louisiana Monroe

Head Coach: Todd Berry
2009 Record: 6-6

Louisiana Monroe Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +750000

Much like their rivals in Lafayette, the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks have made it to six wins in two of the last three years, but they have never been selected for a bowl game. The Warhawks have yet to earn a bowl berth in the school’s history. Charlie Weatherbie lost his job after their poor finish to last year, and Todd Berry is the new head coach here.

Berry was just 5-36 at Army before coming here, so he hasn’t proven himself just yet. Some fans are certainly questioning the move, but only time will tell if Berry can be successful in the Sun Belt.

The Warhawks have a decent nucleus returning on the offensive side of the ball, but the defense will be a real problem in 2010. Overall, the team only has 11 returning starters. Berry will need to get the youngsters playing well early or this could be a tough season.

Team Strengths:

The backfield looks like it is in good shape with Frank Goodin running the football. Goodin rushed for more than 1,100 yards last year and had 13 touchdowns. Many scouts believe Goodin may be the best running back in the Sun Belt Conference. He is the main man for this offense.

The secondary looks ready to improve as it is full of talented veterans. Darius Prelow looks like a star in the making at the safety spot, and he will certainly help keep things tightened up at the back of the defense.

Team Weaknesses:

In 2009, the Warhawks led the league in run defense because of a strong front. This year, the team is full of small youngsters on the front line of the defense. The defensive line will likely be a real problem.

The quarterback situation is a bit unclear as Berry seems to be leaning towards Kolton Browning taking over at the signal caller position. The freshman was great in high school, but he has no experience at all in college. Trey Revell was one of the better quarterbacks in the league last year, so this may turn into a big controversy.

The offensive line returns only two starters from a year ago.

The running game has the potential to be very good, but if the line doesn’t do their job it will hold this team back.

Louisiana Monroe 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 3-9

This is a team that looks like it could struggle mightily in 2010. The schedule is very tough with Arkansas, LSU, and Auburn on their out of conference schedule. The defense was much improved last year, but I have a feeling they won’t be nearly as good this year.

The running game should be solid, but the passing game is a huge question mark. It certainly appears that there are way too many weaknesses for this team to get into the post season this year.
