Big East Football Previews – Connecticut Huskies at No. 16 West Virginia Mountaineers

The Connecticut Huskies open-up their conference play in the Big East against the West Virginia Mountaineers this upcoming Saturday afternoon at Mountaineers Field in Morgantown. Kick-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. and the game will be available on ESPN3.com.

The defending conference champions have limped out to a 2-3 start straight-up and are just 1-4 against the spread. Connecticut is coming off a disappointing 38-31 loss to Western Michigan as a three-point home favorite this past Saturday in a game that went well ‘over’ 47-point line. The total had stayed ‘under’ in its previous four games this year.

The Huskies have struggled on offense this season and are ranked 86th in the nation in scoring with an average of 24.8 points a game. Their passing game is only averaging 215.2 yards a game and they are ranked 84th in the country in rushing with an average of 127.6 yards per game.

West Virginia bounced back from a 47-21 pasting at the hands of LSU two weeks ago as a 5.5-point home underdog with a 55-10 rout of Bowling Green as a 20.5-point home favorite this past Saturday. The win moved the Mountaineers to 4-1 SU on the year and 2-3 ATS. The total has now gone ‘over’ in their last four games. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Geno Smith has already thrown for 1,709 yards and 12 touchdowns to lead a West Virginia passing game that is ranked sixth in the country with an average of 362.8 yards a game. He is completing 64.8 percent of his passes and is averaging 8.02 yards per attempts. The Mountaineers’ running game has been slightly better than UConn’s with an average of 133.2 yards a game.

Connecticut is 1-5 ATS in its last six games, but 11-4 ATS in its last 15 games as an underdog. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of its last nine games overall.
West Virginia is 5-4-1 ATS in its last 10 games, but 3-0-1 ATS in its last five games against teams in the Big East. The total has gone ‘over’ in six of its last eight games overall.

The Huskies shocked the Mountaineers 16-13 in overtime last season as 4.5-point home underdogs, but West Virginia won the previous six meetings SU (5-1 ATS) by an average margin of victory of 23.5 points a game. The same holds true this Saturday as West Virginia rolls to an easy win.
