Head Coach: Bill Snyder
2009 Record: 6-6

Kansas State Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +5000

Bill Snyder is back at Kansas State once again, and in 2009 he proved that he can still work his magic on the sidelines. After losses to Louisiana-Lafayette and UCLA early on, the team really turned the corner. Probably the most telling part of the 2009 season was that after losing to a very good Texas Tech team 66-14, Kansas State turned around and beat a decent Texas A&M team 62-14 the following week. Bill Snyder is definitely bringing back the winning attitude to Manhattan.

The Wildcats will return just 13 starters from last year’s team, so they’ll have their work cut out for them this year. The team is interesting because there are some impressive strengths, but also some glaring weaknesses. They’ll need Carson Coffman to step up and have a big year at quarterback in order to realize their full potential.

Team Strengths:

Daniel Thomas is one of the best running backs in the Big 12. Thomas ran for 1,265 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. I fully expect him to improve on those numbers this season as the team should commit itself to the running game. Sportsbook.com

The offensive line is a very good unit. They return four starters from a group that protected the quarterbacks well last year and blocked well enough for the running game to average 180 yards per game on the ground.

The defensive secondary wasn’t that good last year, but with three returning starters and some talented fresh faces, they should be much improved this season.

Team Weaknesses:

The receiver spot is a huge question mark for this team. Even if Carson Coffman comes along and plays solid, they’ll need some receivers to step up. Their two leading wide receivers from 2009 are gone and so is the tight end. This could be a real area of weakness.

Last year’s Kansas State team had a very strong linebacker unit, but they may be in some trouble at this spot in 2010. The run defense was 15th in the nation in 2009 thanks to some experienced linebackers, but they’ll have to get by without them this year.

Team depth as a whole is a real problem for Bill Snyder’s team. A perfect example of this is the Spring Game this year in which the first team defeated the second team by a score of 79-0.

Until they have some more talented reserves, this team can’t make a huge leap in the rankings.

2010-2011 Kansas State Football Predictions: 7-6

This is an extremely difficult team to handicap in 2010, but I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say they make the postseason because of Snyder’s great record as a coach. Coffman must play well and the running game will need to control the clock and keep the defense off the field. The opening game against UCLA at home will be an interesting one to watch, as will their home dates with Nebraska and Texas.

This team isn’t good enough to take big steps forward just yet, but I think they will make some progress.
