Kansas

This year’s team is an outright embarrassment as it probably wouldn’t have any more victories if it played in the MAC.  The Jayhawks have lost 10 in a row since beating San Diego State, a somewhat impressive win that was so long ago they can  take little confidence from it as they close the season.

The one pleasant surprise is the running game which is a real surprise given that coach Charlie Weis is supposed to be some sort of QB/passing game guru.  Kansas ranks 19th in the nation rushing the football with more than 215 yards per game.

QB Dayne Crist has to be one of the biggest disappointments anywhere in the country.  He transferred from Notre Dame hoping to justify his lofty recruiting rating but has struggled even more than he did under the Golden Dome.

A few closer than expected losses made Kansas not a complete and utter disaster ATS going 4-6-1.  This program is in danger of becoming completely irrelevant in football which is pretty amazing considering they went 12-1 and won the Orange Bowl just 5 years ago.  If I were the athletic director I would cut bait on Weis right now.  He is not going to turn this around.

West Virginia

What a weird season for West Virginia.  At their best they were an unstoppable offensive force, winning their first 5 games in impressive fashion.  Then the bottom fell out and they lost 5 games in a row, mostly due to suspect defense, but also due to uncharacteristically poor offensive showings.[soliloquy id=”82219″]

They won last week to get their 6th victory out of the way and should feast on Kansas to pad their offensive numbers on Saturday.

If you hadn’t been following them game by game you would think QB Geno Smith should still be in the Heisman race.  The senior QB has thrown 37 TDs against 5 interceptions and is completing passes at a 70% clip.  Impressive numbers but the game logs show different stories.  When they win he is fantastic, when they don’t not so much.  He is blessed with one of the best receiver tandems in Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey who will be too much to handle in the finale.

Even when they were winning West Virginia was tripping up the market.  They are just 4-7 ATS on the season and that included victories the last two weeks.  The number for Saturday is smaller than I would have expected.  Kansas is awful and I would think coach Dana Holgorsen will give the graduating Smith a chance to put up up lethal numbers in his last game in front of the home fans.
