Our 2009 NCAA Football Predictions – Teams | Analysis | Previews Online

Coach: Kirk Ferentz
2008 Record: 9-4

Historically, Ferentz and his staff are known and respected by NFL brass for getting a lot out of few top-tier recruits.

Iowa Gambling Odds from Betus.com to win BCS: +6600

Ferentz is well-paid and won the Big Ten’s Coach of the Year in 2002 and ’04. It will take a similar gargantuan effort for Iowa to win the conference this year, but this is a team where the collective is worth more than the individual parts. With southpaw pivot Jake Christensen transferring, this is Ricky Stanzi’s offense now. The biggest blow to the offense’s effectiveness is the departure of stud RB Shonn Greene to the NFL. However, Iowa should have a solid O-line to open some holes for soph Jewel Hampton.

The linebackers should be hungry and capable and the Hawks can play the field position game with P Ryan Donahue.

Team Strengths
Left tackle Bryan Bulaga is a special one. He was second-team Big Ten last season and has the size (6”6, 312) and the temperament to be elite.

The defensive back seven is also strong, highlighted by Mike linebacker Pat Angerer and speedy corner Amari Spievey.

Team Weaknesses
The D-line loses two high-motor, awesome defensive tackles in Mitch King and Matt Kroul. The run defense will doubtlessly feel the pinch. Also, to this point in his career (he’s only a junior) Stanzi hasn’t been memorable under center.

Iowa has a very tough road slate this season (at Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Ohio State) but this is a team that should play hard and will be tough competition for anyone.

If the backfield can surpass expectations, look for Iowa to exceed last year’s win total.

2009 Iowa Hawkeyes Record Prediction: 10-3
