WAC Conference Football Previews: Idaho

Head Coach: Robb Akey
2009 Record: 8-5

Idaho Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +200000

The 2009 football season was easily the best year ever for Idaho football. To put this into perspective, this team had gone just 3-21 in Akey’s first two seasons as coach at the school, and then leapt to last year’s 8-5 record. The team finished off the year with a 43-42 victory in the Humanitarian Bowl.

The most interesting part of the Vandals success might be that it makes very little sense when you look at the statistics from the year. Their turnover margin was one of the worst in the country, and they allowed more points than they scored. What does this mean? It means that Akey’s squad was able to pull out a lot of very close victories in 2009.

Will the banner season give them momentum going forward?

Let’s take a look at the 2010 preview for the Idaho Vandals.

Team Strengths:

Nathan Enderle is a solid quarterback who is quickly becoming an NFL prospect. Enderle improved his decision making quite a bit in 2009 and I fully expect him to have another impressive year in 2010. He has great size and a huge arm, so the potential for even more is there.

The rushing defense is in good shape for the Vandals. JoJo Dickson and Robert Siavii are both high quality linebackers and the defensive line is strong in the middle.

Shiloh Keo is one of the best defensive players in the WAC at strong safety. Keo cleans up quite a bit of the plays that the rest of the team allows to get through. Keo is also a great punt returner for the Vandals.

Team Weaknesses:

The offensive line was good last year, but they have just one returning starter in 2010. The skill positions are solid on offense, but if this unit doesn’t come together quickly, they will hold this team back in a big way.

The defense can’t seem to get off the field. The Vandals were the second worst team in all of football last year, allowing their opponent to convert 53% of the time on third down.

Other than Keo, the defensive secondary is bad. The Vandals allowed about 280 yards per game through the air in 2009, which just won’t cut it against the best teams in the WAC. The cornerbacks are poor in man to man coverage, which puts a lot of pressure on Keo.

Idaho 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 8-5

I think there is a strong likelihood that Idaho will take a step back in 2010. This team performed way higher than anyone’s expectations in 2009, but they lost quite a bit of talent. The defense is simply too weak to beat any of the best teams in the WAC, and the offense could struggle as well if the offensive line doesn’t perform well.

Games on the road at Louisiana Tech and Hawaii in October are games they need to win if they are going to go bowling again this year.

Idaho’s program is still going in the right direction, but this year won’t be as good as 2009.
