Conference USA Football Previews: Houston

Head Coach: Kevin Sumlin
2009 Record: 10-4

Houston Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +20000

The 2009 version of the Houston Cougars football team was as explosive on offense as anyone in the country. Most experts don’t expect that to change one bit in 2010. The part that Kevin Sumlin and this Houston team is counting on changing is how they finish the season.

Last year they were beaten in their final two games, including a 47-20 loss to Air Force in the Armed Forces Bowl.

The Cougars have high expectations in 2010 because Heisman Trophy candidate Case Keenum and most of the offense are back. Keenum is listed at +1,500 on 5dimes to win the Heisman Trophy this season.

There is little doubt that this team will be able to outscore most of the teams they play this year, but can the defense step up and prove and stop their best opponents?

Team Strengths:

The entire offense could really be listed as an area of strength for this team. Any team that has a guy like Case Keenum at quarterback is set when it comes to having a high quality signal caller.

Keenum is going to break all kinds of NCAA records this year and he is the perfect fit for this offense. Case threw for 5,671 yards a year ago and it wouldn’t shock me if he bested that total this year.

Keenum has one of the best wide receiver trios in the country to throw the football to as well. James Cleveland, Tyron Carrier, and Patrick Edwards are all high quality wide receivers that will get open on a consistent basis.

This is definitely the best wide receiver unit in the conference, and it is one of the top ten in the country.

Team Weaknesses:

The Houston defense overall was just not good in 2009. The most concerning statistic was that they were 97th in the country on third down conversion defense. The opposing offense was frequently able to keep the ball out of Houston’s hands by converted on third down.

The defensive secondary doesn’t have the depth that most units on this team have. Last year the Cougars were carved up by the best quarterbacks they faced on a consistent basis. They’ll need improvement from both corners and the safeties to be a top 25 team this year.

2010-2011 Houston Cougars Football Predictions: 12-2

I think the Cougars will finish the season stronger than they did in 2009. New defensive coordinator Brian Stewart should help the defense improve enough to make the Cougars a noticeably better football team this year.

Don’t be a bit surprised if Houston leads the nation in total offense once again and if you hear Case Keenum’s name in the Heisman race quite often. The key game on their schedule will be their November 20th trip to Southern Mississippi.

Houston will be a very good football team, and they should certainly be the class of Conference USA.
