It’s likely that a loss to Miami, who is also in a must-win situation, would eliminate the Hokies from the ACC race all together, after losing two straight. They must now try to stay alive by beating a Miami team that they have not had much success against in the past.

The Hokies (6-3) run defense collapsed against the Boston College rushing attack, allowing  Adre Williams to rush for 166 yards and two touchdowns to pull off the Atlantic Coast Conference upset.

And the offense did even worse, turning over the ball four times.

Quarterback Logan Thomas was intercepted twice — both leading to scores — and fumbled once, finishing with  391 yards and two touchdowns — his third career 300-yard passing day.

The rest of the defense was staunch overall, as the Eagles gained just 289 yards in offense against Virginia Tech, which entered the contest ranked third nationally at 248 yards allowed per game.

The Hurricanes(7-1) meanwhile, can still sneak into the ACC Championship after Saturday’s 41-14 loss at Florida State. A win over the Hokies almost guarantees Miami their first title-game appearance since joining the league in 2004, if they can back it up with a win over Duke next week.

Offensively, the Canes’ will be handicapped, as Duke Johnson – the second-leading rusher in the conference – will miss the rest of the season after he broke his right ankle against Florida State.

They will need to lean on  replacement Dallas Crawford, who will be one of three backs to fill the void Of Johnson,  who has posted an ACC-high 1,393 all-purpose yards.

The Hurricanes will need to tighten up a defense that allowed Florida State to convert 11-of-15 third-down opportunities last week, while, Virginia Tech, who has committed eight turnovers over its last two contests will need to take better care of the ball.

This one gets decided by one critical giveaway.

Miami 27, Virginia Tech 24
