Hawaii Warriors vs. Oregon State Beavers Gambling Prediction & Week 2 Preview

Warriors vs Beavers NCAA Football Spread/Handicapping

The Oregon State Beavers had one of the most disappointing results of any FBS team in Week 1. They lost to the Eastern Washington Eagles (FCS), and as a result, they dropped out of the AP Top 25. The Hawaii Warriors are also looking for their first win, as they fell to USC 30-13.

The Beavers will host this one, and the home crowd will be expecting a much better defensive performance this time around.

Hawaii

Hawaii entered its season-opening matchup against USC as the underdog, and although it fought nobly during stints, it wasn’t enough to overtake the Trojans. A loss in Week 1 wasn’t shocking, but now it has a chance to kick a team while it’s down in Corvallis.

Unlike the Beavers, Hawaii’s primary improvement has to be on offense. It will look to take advantage of an OSU squad that lacked good tackling from the secondary.

Unfortunately, head coach Norm Chow fired his offensive coordinator this past offseason, which could mean that the attack on offense remains shaky for the foreseeable future.

The defensive performance from Hawaii against USC wasn’t all bad at times. It gave the team a 5-3 lead in the second quarter, and against the Beavers, it’ll have fewer elite athletes to cover at once. In theory, this game belongs to Oregon State every time, but as we saw last week, anything can happen in Corvallis.

Both of these teams are looking to improve, but for the Warriors, they’ll have to take the pressure off their defense with a better offensive showing. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Oregon State

The Beavers are looking for a bounce-back performance.

They entered 2013 with hopes of continuing down the path they paved last season, but a shoddy defensive performance against Eastern Washington put a quick end to that thought. They gave up more than 500 total yards (and six touchdowns) to the opposing quarterback, and they allowed 49 points after giving up fewer than 21 points per contest in 2012.

OSU needs to get back to its grind-it-out mentality on defense, and it has to put pressure on the quarterback. Hawaii’s running game was essentially non-existent in Week 1 against USC, and that should remain true on Saturday.

If the Beavers can get to Taylor Graham, they’ll be in good shape.

On offense, Oregon State found a ton of success with Sean Mannion running the show behind center. The quarterback tossed for 422 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. He completed 37 of his 43 attempts for a completion percentage of 86 percent.

This team has running backs capable of making big plays, most notably Storm Woods. But while the ground game can help balance the attack, it’s going to be the arm of Mannion that wins moving forward. Against Hawaii, Mannion will be able to do some damage.

As long as the defense puts forth a better effort than it did in Game 1, we should see the Beavers redeem themselves.
