Hawaii Warriors 2012 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2012-13 Football Previews – (Mountain West) – Hawaii

Hawaii slipped to 6-7 in 2011, and the team decided to part ways with Greg McMackin. Fortunately for the Warriors, they landed a huge name in offensive guru Norm Chow. Chow has been behind the success of quarterbacks such as Ty Detmer, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, and many others. Hawaii fans have high hopes that Chow can move this program forward in the coming years.

Head Coach: Norm Chow
2011 Record: 6-7

Hawaii lost a ton of talent after last year, and Chow will have to start off with a lot of inexperience. Only a dozen starters return from last year’s squad. No one is expected Chow to have a ton of success right away, but in the long run he seems like a great fit for this high-flying Hawaii football program.

Team Strengths:

Hawaii appears to be all set at the wide receiver spot. Billy Ray Stutzmann and Jeremiah Ostrowski are both play makers on the outside. Ostrowski was injured a lot in 2011, but he has the potential to have a breakout season in the West Coast offense. The speed at wide receiver here should be great for Chow’s offense.

The strength of the defense is clearly in the secondary. Mike Edwards and John Hardy-Tuliau are very solid at the corner spots. The safeties aren’t as experienced, but they have lots of athleticism. The Warriors have the quickness to stay with most people they’ll play this year.

Team Weaknesses:

The defensive line is a major problem area heading into 2012. The Warriors new coaching staff wants to implement a 5-2 defense, but there isn’t much in the way of talent along the defensive line. There isn’t much size in the middle of the defense. Expect Hawaii’s defensive line to be dominated by the best running teams they play against.   [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Hawaii is usually set at quarterback, but it seems Norm Chow has been struggling to find the right guy for his offense in the offseason. David Graves was the expected starter, but as many as four guys have been getting a look at this position. In order to be successful in this offense, Hawaii will have to get good quarterback play. It’s definitely a concern.

The team is essentially starting from scratch on the offensive line. Only one starter remains, and the backups haven’t seen much action at all. The West Coast offense definitely needs a talented offensive line to be effective. The Warriors have to hope some of the youngsters step up right away.

2012-2013 Hawaii Warriors Football Prediction: 5-7

It’s hard to see this team winning more than half of its games with the massive holes on both the offensive and defensive lines. With no star at the quarterback spot the offense might not be quite as explosive as past years, but I think the bigger problem will be the defense. Opponents should be able to run the ball quite easily against this weak defensive front. The Warriors have to travel to both USC and BYU in non-conference action.

The Mountain West is a much more difficult conference than the WAC, and this team should have some growing pains. Look for about five wins this year from Hawaii.
