WAC Conference Football Previews: Hawaii

Head Coach: Greg McMackin
2009 Record: 6-7

Hawaii Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +160000

The Hawaii Warriors were used to winning a lot of games in recent years, but last year they didn’t even get to a bowl game. Expectations around the program are that this team will be improved from a year ago.

The skill position players on the offense are great, but question marks on the offensive line could hold them back. The home field advantage is always great for Hawaii, because let’s face it, it is difficult for a team to be focused when they spend a lot of time in Hawaii!

The departure of June Jones to SMU was a big worry for Hawaii fans, and the offense has suffered a bit in the first couple of years.

McMackin and his staff believe they have the talent to start building the program back up in the next couple of years.

Team Strengths:

The Warriors have a trio of wide receivers that are extremely talented. Greg Salas is the best of the bunch, but Keahola Pilares, and Rodney Bradley are also very solid. Other than Boise State, they may possess the best receiving corps in the WAC.

The Hawaii secondary is tremendous. The Warriors are full of athleticism as well as leadership in this key group. Mana Silva and Spencer Smith form what may be the best duo of safeties in the league, and both of the cornerbacks have proven they are play makers.

Bryant Moniz appears to be getting the system figured out at quarterback. The junior has plenty of talent and should be able to make big plays in this passing attack in 2010.

Team Weaknesses:

The offensive line is a serious concern for this Hawaii team going into 2010. The quarterback and receivers are in place to run the offense, but they’ll need solid blocking in order for it to work. The line returns just one starter and has no clear leader. This could be a huge problem.

The linebackers from 2009 are all gone and the Warriors must look to a new group of youngsters to step up quickly. This team was poor at stopping the run in 2009, and I don’t expect them to improve in 2010.

The defensive front is simply not strong enough to stop powerful rushing attacks, and they generate almost no pass rush. The secondary is very good, but the lack of a pass rush puts a ton of pressure on them.

Hawaii 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 7-6

The Warriors are one of the rare college football teams that play 13 regular season games. They take on USC in their opener and travel to Colorado as well, so the non-conference schedule is fairly difficult. Inside the conference, their key games will probably be their home tests against Louisiana Tech and Nevada.

They’ll need to win at least one of these games. In the end I think Hawaii will get to a bowl game and then lose the bowl game, to finish at an even .500.

There is quite a bit of talent here, but the weakness of both lines is a huge concern.
