Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Nebraska Cornhuskers’ chances of winning the Legends division was on life support last Saturday at home versus the Northwestern Wildcasts. That was until Nebraska sent in third string Senior Quarterback, Ron Kellogg III to throw up a prayer in the finals seconds of a game they were trailing in. Down 24-21 and looking at their second conference loss with just a few seconds left on Northwestern’s 49 Nebraska’s prayer was answered.

As the ball sailed in the air, it was right around the goal line. At this point all the Northwestern defenders converged to bat it down. The problem here is EVERYBODY converged. Nobody stayed back just in case the ball deflected behind them. Well, that’s exactly what happened. The ball was bounced up and behind them and with no Wildcats in the back of the end zone Nebraska wide receiver, Jordan Westerkamp, snuck behind the defense and ended up catching the tipped Hail Mary. Nebraska won the game 27-24, keeping the Cornhuskers’ season alive and their chances of winning the Legends division.

After a slow start and a disappointing loss at home to the UCLA Bruins, the Cornhuskers bounced back with three decisive wins over South Dakota State, Illinois, Purdue, but that momentum they had quickly disappeared as they lost on the road to the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Then, of course, there last game against Northwestern they were very lucky to have won.

Offensively, Nebraska is very explosive. They average 206 passing yards,  average 261.6 rushing yards, and they average scoring 38.3 points a game. They are a good offensive team led by star halfback Ameer Abdullah. Defensively is where the problem lies for Nebraska. They aren’t consistent and they give up a lot of yards in chunks and they’ve allowed 24 points per game.

Michigan Wolverines

With “little brother” Michigan State humiliating Michigan last week; that effectively ended Michigan’s chances to win the Legends division. Michigan is now just playing for pride, playing to get to a better bowl game, continuing to get better for the future, and most importantly getting ready to try and knock off hated rival Ohio State in a few weeks from now.

Michigan has an explosive offense when they aren’t playing a good defensive team. When they do play a great defense – such as Michigan State’s defense – they’ve had been shut down. A lot like what happened in the Denard Robinson era.

Much like Nebraska, the Wolverines are a very good offense led by star Quarterback Devin Gardner, but their problem is on the defensive end. They allow lots of yards in bunches, and they’ve allowed 27 points per game.

Danny’s FREE NCAAF Pick:

This game is like looking into a mirror. History, tradition, disappointing 2013 seasons,  good offenses, bad defenses, I can’t get over how similar these teams are.

The key difference here though is Nebraska is on the road with a freshman quarterback. That’s the big difference (and just about the only difference between the two teams) I see. It’s not easy playing in the Big House and it’s even harder when you are an inexperienced quarterback.

I think Michigan will put eight men in the box to stop star halfback Ameer Abdullah and force freshman redshirt Tommy Armstrong to beat them. If they do that, look for Armstrong to make mistakes that could cost Nebraska the game. I’ve got Michigan winning at home once again and covering the spread.

Pick: Michigan Wolverines -7
Prediction: Michigan Wolverines 34 – Nebraska Cornhuskers 24
