Preview:

Everyone’s afterthought – except for hopefully the fans in Mobile – on the long-awaited eve of national championship day is the plucky ole’ GMAC Bowl. Two ferocious teams from the Sun Belt and MAC conferences do battle! All sarcasm and smugness aside, we will hopefully see a good match-up in what will effectively be a home game for Troy.

The Chippewas have been led for the past few seasons by QB Dan LeFevour, a player reminds people of a poor man’s Tim Tebow. With over 3,000 yards in the air and over 700 on the ground in 2009, he’ll get you yards any way you like. As LeFevour goes, so does the entire Central Michigan team; when he is stymied (as he was in losses to Arizona and Boston College) the results aren’t positive for the Chippewas.

However, the pivot has a reputation for exploding in bowl games; in a 2007 barnburning 51-48 loss to Purdue, LeFevour had 406 total yards and six TDs.

If Troy’s unimpressive defense is in for a performance like that, the Rust Belt will trump the Deep South. The Trojans have an outstanding offense on their own accord. Troy’s passing attack is fourth in the FBS at 331 ypg. Furthermore, the offense is capable of making enough gains on the ground to keep the attack interesting and varied.

Quarterback Levi Brown directs the traffic and though he spreads the ball around, his favorite target is WR Jerrel Jernigan. Jernigan will also tote the ball a few times and return kicks, so he’s an all-purpose threat.

We can see that this game might come down to who out-guns each other.

Central Michigan has a capable defense and if they can slow down the Trojans at all, a stand-out LeFevour performance in his last game as a collegian should be enough to vault the Chips to a win, even in the Trojans’ home state of Alabama.
