Rejoice, online betting fans – college football is back! The 2009 NCAA season kicks off tonight and continues into the weekend. Let’s make some picks for Saturday’s games.

(13) Georgia vs (9) Oklahoma St.

Saturday, September 5, 3:30 p.m. ET

College football betting favorite: Oklahoma St. -6

Does any team have more at stake than the Oklahoma State Cowboys this week? A win over Georgia gives them an excellent chance to go undefeated until their big game with Texas later in the season; a loss could derail their hopes for a BCS Championship.

The Cowboys are decent sports picks to beat Georgia, but I’m not convinced that they’ll cover the spread. Sure, OSU’s offense is strong with the likes of Zach Robinson leading the attack, but Georgia’s defense is no slouch playing in the SEC. We know the Bulldogs get the job done against the run, but the story of the day will be whether or not they put enough heat on Robinson to force mistakes. I think they can; Georgia faces little pressure this season after saying goodbye to stars Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno while OSU faces tremendous pressure this week and may be jittery.

Oklahoma State will pull out a win…by the skin of its teeth. It won’t cover the six-point spread.

Betting services recommend: Georgia +6

(5) Alabama vs (7) Virginia Tech

Saturday, September 5, 8:00 p.m. ET

College football betting favorite: Alabama -6

What better way to inject life into Week 1 than to pit two top-10 teams against each other? There’s plenty on the line right out of the gate for Alabama and Virginia Tech; Alabama in particular could use a win after Utah shocked them in the Sugar Bowl to end last season.

The Crimson Tide should win with defense first this season and that will be their edge on Saturday. Alabama’s third-ranked defense of a year ago returns nine starters, so it’s scary to think how much better the “D” can be, especially in the front seven. The Hokies lost running back Darren Evans to injury but their passing game may surprise this year, as shifty Tyrod Thomas has all his receivers back from last season. Still, the Crimson Tide are an extremely tough test for a VT offense that will struggle to score this season.

Greg McElroy has to adjust to being a featured pivot quickly but at least he’ll have Julio Jones catching passes. The Sooners will score just enough to cover the spread and win.
Betting services recommend: Alabama -6

Great opening test for the Bulldogs as they take on a very strong Oklahoma St team on the road. I think Georgia a better than average chance to not only cover the 6 but to win outright. They are my first Top 25 upset special.
