WAC Conference Football Previews: Fresno State

Head Coach: Pat Hill
2009 Record: 8-5

Fresno State Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +42500

Pat Hill has done a nice job building up the Fresno State football program. His attitude of taking on all comers when it comes to scheduling has helped instill a winning attitude in his football players. Fresno State may not be the top team in the conference anymore, but they have plenty of talent to make some noise.

The loss of star running back Ryan Matthews to the NFL is a huge one, since he accounted for almost 2,000 yards of total offense for the Bulldogs in 2009. The good news for Fresno State is that their schedule is much easier than most years, so they won’t have to battle the toughest teams in the country in their non-conference slate.

The Bulldogs must improve on defense if they are going to gain ground on a team like Boise State.

Team Strengths:

The offensive line should be very good this year. The Bulldogs have amazing size on the line and they will almost certainly outclass most of the defensive lines they go up against in 2010.

The linebackers are a very solid group. Ben Jacobs is one of the best players in the WAC, and Travis Brown looks like a talented youngster who will step up this year. Add in a solid player like Chris Lewis and this will be one of the best linebacker units in the WAC.

Even though Matthews is gone, the Fresno State running game should be an area of strength. Robbie Rouse looks like a nice solid running back who could turn into a workhorse for the team.

Team Weaknesses:

The Fresno State defensive line was terrible in 2009, and that led to the team reaching a pathetic total of 11 sacks. For a team with as much talent as they have, it is inexcusable to reach only 11 sacks for an entire season. Chris Carter is strong at the defensive end spot, but the rest of the line is questionable.

Other than Jamel Hamler, the wide receivers haven’t proven capable of making big plays. In the WAC it is necessary to have some big play guys, and Fresno may be lacking a bit in this department on the outside.

The secondary is a big weakness for the Bulldogs. Lorne Bell is solid, but he is the only one of the group with real experience. It could be another rough year for the secondary.

Fresno State 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 8-5

I think this Fresno State team will be a little weaker than in the past couple of years, but they will benefit from a light schedule. They have a chance to start the season strong against Cincinnati at home, and they’ll also get Cal Poly and Hawaii at home this year.

The toughest game is certainly at Boise State on November 19th, but they shouldn’t overlook Nevada the week before of they’ll lose that game.

The Bulldogs will be solid, but they have too many flaws to be among the best.
