The Battle of the Palmetto State is one that rolls out two talented teams, but two that are usually under-performing.

Throw the records out the window when it is Rivalry Week, however.

Clemson registers on the AP rankings at #21 (8-3 overall), but Carolina has limped through a disappointing campaign (6-5, 3-5 in the SEC).

With the offseason departure of QB Tajh Boyd and stud WR Sammy Watkins, Clemson’s offense definitely took a hit.

Yet, the Tigers have hung their hat on defense this year. Terrorizing pass-rusher Vic Beasley DB Travis Blanks and LBs Stephone Anthony and Tony Steward are studs.

They’ve spearheaded a unit that ranks eighth in the country in points allowed, despite having heavy hitters like Georgia and Florida State on the schedule.

Clemson’s “D” only surrenders about 17 points per game, so it won’t be easy sledding for the visitors’ attack.

South Carolina rolls into town with some good wins on its slate (East Carolina, Georgia, OT versus Florida) but some sheepish losses as well (OT versus Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas A&M).

You never really know what you’re going to get out of head coach Steve Spurrier’s group.

The Gamecocks have a capable offense led by veteran QB Dylan Thompson and RB Mike Davis. Sophomore WR Pharoh Cooper has been great also (58 receptions, 921 yards, eight TDs). Carolina will need all three of these players pulling in the same direction against the vaunted Tigers’ defense.

Clemson is bouncing back after losing Boyd and Watkins, but SC is picking up the pieces after losing first overall NFL draft pick DE Jadeveon Clowney.

The two pre-eminent South Carolina football schools will always reel in some top recruits, but they need they need to learn to reload like their counterparts in Alabama are able to do.

NCAAF Trends

* SOCAR are 9-3 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
* Under is 6-2 in SOCAR last 8 games in November.
* Under is 8-3 in CLEM last 11 vs. SEC.

After consecutive victories versus the Gators and South Alabama, a road win at Clemson would be a nice way to end the season on a positive for Spurrier.

He’s never really delivered the Gamecocks to the promised land like he intended, but it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom.

Expect Clemson to be rocking in “The Other Death Valley” (LSU’s Baton Rouge digs will always be Death Valley to me).

A win in their final game will surely send the Tigers to a high-level bowl game, and head coach Dabo Swinney wants to send his seniors out floating.

With two comparable rosters talent-wise, I like Clemson in this game for that reason.
