The Cowboys, for all their pluck, hope to slow KSU’s momentum in Manhattan on Saturday night.

I shouldn’t really suggest the Wildcats are just a two-trick pony; RB Charles Jones has been a force, scoring nine TDs so far on the campaign.

Kansas State’s 6-1 overall mark and unbeaten conference record has them sitting pretty in the Big 12 North. KSU’s only loss was a narrow one at the hands of Auburn, so you have to be impressed at what the ageless head coach (and stadium namesake) Snyder has cooked up this season.

The Wildcats have to be riding high following a 23-0 shutout of Texas last week, in a contest that indicated really just how much the conference balance of power has shifted over the past couple of seasons.

Oklahoma State is gritty, if nothing else. The Cowboys have been trending downward though, after consecutive losses to TCU and West Virginia, which combined with a narrow loss to Florida State to open the season, has the Cowboys with three Ls.

The offense has been carried by the workmanlike RB Desmond Roland, but this was somewhat of a rebuilding year in Stillwater with all the turnover on defense. It’s shown in recent weeks, with OSU giving up a combined 76 points to its past two opponents.

It would be a pretty sizeable upset if the Cowboys came into KSU’s barn and left with a victory. Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy has recruited consistently enough (being so geographically close to the recruiting hotbed of Texas helps) that the Cowboys will be back, but they need to get some seasoning in key areas.

Starting pivot Daxx Gorman has thrown nine INTs to his 11 TDs, so he needs to tidy things up a bit. Beefing up the defense will go a long way to putting OSU back in the mix.

In the meantime, Kansas State is feeling like this year is its time to party. The top-10 ranking is an accomplishment and the team is adept at scoring (24th in the nation, 37 points per) and stopping scoring (16th nationally, yielding 19.3 points per).

Waters’s dual-threat capability (1,655 passing yards, 370 rush yards, 16 total TDs) has been central to the Wildcats’ recent success. As long as he’s healthy and can take the focus of the opponent’s defense, studs like Lockett and senior WR Curry Sexton can wreak havoc.

That’s exactly what they’ve done to the Big 12 for most of the season. A narrow win two weeks ago versus Oklahoma was huge for the program.

The Wildcats have played the “David” in the David v. Goliath narrative quite often in recent history and they are happy to be in the same spot this time around.
