Minnesota

The Gophers have been steady but unspectacular this season.

They have won all of the games they were supposed to but got a bit exposed when they went down to TCU, losing 30-7.

They are looking to catch Michigan at exactly the right time but it won’t be easy to win on the road. A key will be nursing QB Mitch Leidner back to health.

He has a turf toe that kept him out of the last game, which they won easily against San Jose State. As much as Big Blue is struggling this week won’t be as easy.

Minnesota has not beaten Michigan since 2005 and a healthy Leidner will be key to trying ot end that streak.

His overall numbers are not very good but last week backup Chris Streveler completed just one pass in the victory – has to be some sort of modern record, right?

If you look closely you can see that Leider was completely befuddled in the loss down at TCU. Other than that he hasn’t been great but he might be good enough given what we are seeing from Big Blue these days.

Michigan

Things went from pretty bad to much worse for Michigan last week.

A few years back losing at home to Utah might not have been so bad but this is a low tier PAC12 team and they came into the Big House and beat the Wolverines despite being outgained in the contest. Michigan has some talent but they are just too mistake prone right now.

It might be time for Devon Gardner to change his jersey number. The only thing worse than a QB throwing an interception is doing so with the jersey of a defensive end.

There is some talent on this team but they keep getting in their own way.

Turnovers did them in against Utah last week and if they are sloppy again they will lose to Minnesota as well. Last year Gardner had one of his most efficient games of the season against the Gophers going 13/17 with no interceptions.

They don’t need him to play great to get another easy victory, just not make the kind of mistakes that will cost them the game.

NCAA Football Week #5 Prediction: 4* Free Play on Minnesota +8.5

Not sure you can really get behind Michigan these days.

NCAAF Score prediction:  Michigan 27 – Minnesota 20

They are still very public which is why I suspect this one opened at 7 and have already jumped a bit.
