Cougars vs Golden Bears Pick

NCAA Football Week 13 Betting action sees the BYU Cougars taking on the California Golden Bears on Saturday November 29th at Memorial Stadium. Cappers Picks provides free college football handicapping tips all season long.

The Cal Golden Bears have made significant strides in 2014, although that’s not hard to do when you finish 1-11 and winless in the Pac-12 last year.

After an excellent start to the season, the Bears hope to finish their season positively by dispatching the visiting BYU Cougars.

The Bears were 4-1 going into the middle of October, which must have seemed night-and-day from last year’s catastrophe of a season.

Sadly, Cal has been 1-5 since Oct. 11, when the meat of its schedule started. At 5-6 overall and 3-6 in the conference, it’s still a positive stride for this program.

The Golden Bears have a highly prolific passing attack (fifth nationally with almost 342 yards per game, to be exact) but must fix a totally miserable defense. The Bears rank 124th in the nation in total defense, surrendering almost 40 points per game.

California won’t take the next step until it can find some defensive personnel that can, well, play football.

Brigham Young University has had a vaguely respectable year with its 7-4 mark overall. The FBS Independent has been very streaky, winning four straight to start the year, followed by dropping four but now again riding a three-game win streak.

It’s not hard when your recent opponents have been UNLV, Middle Tennessee State and Savannah State, but I digress.

To be fair, the Cougars did beat Texas 41-7 earlier in the year, which is impressive even with the Longhorns being a bit of a mess right now. Texas is still a program with elite prestige and the corresponding recruits.

BYU relies on the strong receiving tandem of lanky 6″6 possession receiver Mitch Mathews (63 receptions, 801 yards, eight TDs) and senior WR Jordan Leslie (49 grabs, 601 yards and three majors). That duo could have a field day against Cal’s impotent back seven.

On the other side of the field, sophomore Cal QB Jared Goff has been putting up eye-popping stats. Goff has thrown for 3,580 yards and 31 TDs, to just six picks. He is the main reason why the Bears won the games they did this season.

Goff has been assisted by RB Daniel Lasco, who is closing in on 1,000 yards rushing on the campaign (985 currently) and has also found the end-zone 12 times. Really, there’s nothing wrong with the Golden Bears’ offense.

4* Free CFB Play On: BYU 42, California 31

It’s been a nice narrative of progress in Berkeley, and improvement will no doubt continue to made in the offseason, but I see BYU’s offense capitalizing on the home side and the Cougars going back to Utah with a notch in the win column.
