This Saturday features a pivotal SEC West division match-up in Dixieland, as the fate of both Auburn and Ole Miss’s seasons hang in the balance, with both teams currently at 6-1. With both fan-bases in a tizzy, it should be a weekend filled with drama.

The Rebels had their dream season dashed slightly when they lost to LSU last week.

It’s still a chance for an historic football season for the state (especially with Mississippi State still undefeated) and if Ole Miss can defeat Auburn, its candidacy for the FBS playoff will still look strong.

Auburn has different ideas. The Tigers have already been thwarted once this season in Dixieland, losing to Heisman candidate QB Dak Prescott and the MSU Bulldogs. Head coach Gus Malzahn’s men won’t care to lose to the other team from Mississippi as well.

The Tigers strength is in old-school principles: run game and defense. Auburn ranks tenth in the nation in rushing yards per game (281) and an impressive 25th in total defense, a year after the Tigers were a train-wreck on “D”.

This, along with Malzahn’s high-tempo strategy, has fuelled Auburn’s renaissance.

Still, the Tigers are coming off two weeks that have seen a loss to the Bulldogs and a narrow escape against South Carolina, so this team desperately wants to get back to where it thinks it should be.

Looking at the home team, the Rebs seem to live and die with QB Bo Wallace. At the high points – like the incredible upset win against Alabama – Wallace looks like a surefire Heisman winner.

At the low points, like mustering only a single TD in last week’s 10-7 loss – it’s not so pretty.

Ole Miss has NFL-calibre players on both sides of the ball. Wide receiver Laquon Treadwell, TE Evan Ingram, DE Robert Ndkemiche and S Cody Prewitt are the types to see the field on Sundays.

Yet, Wallace is the straw that stirs the drink.

Ultimately, both teams need a win to stay alive in the divisional race. The SEC West is so competitive that two losses mean you are out of the contest.

Also, whichever team loses this contest is almost certainly on the outside looking in on the playoff.

For Auburn – a team that’s looking to rebound to national prominence after a brief hiatus; and Ole Miss – a team that’s playing some its best football in school history, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

If Auburn is going to come to Oxford and get a win, it will need another big day from RB Cameron Artis-Payne, who’s currently second in the SEC with 119 rush yards per game and coming off a big 167-yard day versus Carolina last week.

For Ole Miss to take care of business on its home turf, the Rebs need a vintage performance from Wallace, rather than a stinker.

If Wallace can play decently, the athletes and playmakers are present on Mississippi’s roster to neutralize the visitors.

4* NCAAF Score Prediction: Ole Miss 28, Auburn 24

A lot should be revealed about the SEC West landscape this Saturday night.
