Sun Devils vs Broncos NCAA Football – Holiday Bowl Odds

This year’s MAACO Las Vegas bowl features two of college football’s most prolific quarterbacks, as No. 6 Boise State’s Kellen Moore (49-3), the winningest quarterback in NCAA history, faces off against Arizona State gunslinger Brock Osweiler who passed for 3,641 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2011.

After posting a 6-2 record in late October, Arizona State was cruising to a berth in the Pac-12 title game before the wheels feel of the bus in November, resulting in a four-game stretch to end the season while allowing 144 points.

Two of them coming from weaker PAC-12 contenders, UCLA and Washington State.

That late season collapse resulted in the firing of head coach Dennis Erickson, who will however, coach in the bowl game this Thursday. ASU’s first bowl game since losing to Texas in the 2007 Holiday Bowl.

But among the lowlights of the season, the Devils did have a few highlights. One of those being a 43-22 win over USC in Week 4.

Running back Cameron Marshall rushed for three touchdowns while Osweiler completed 25-of-32 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns in that game.

Marshall ended the season with 1,038 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns to tie a school record shared by Woody Green (1972) and Terry Battle (1996).

Defensively, linebacker Vontaze Burfict (team-high five sacks) has been practicing on the second team after he finished the regular season poorly and reportedly refused to re-enter the season finale against California after being pulled.

It is still unknown if he will start in Thursday’s contest.

That could be good news to a B-State team that is back in this contest for the second straight year after once again missing out on a BCS bid due to the same formula that hurt them in 2010 – a weak schedule and a missed field goal. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Boise State went 1-1 against the two tough teams on its schedule this season and lost to the Horned Frogs 36-35 when Dan Goodale missed a game-winning 39-yard field goal attempt.

But take nothing away from Moore, who passed for 3,507 yards and a school-record 41 touchdowns, most of those to receiver Tyler Shoemaker who hauled in a school-best 15 TDs.

But the Broncos can hit you with more than a copious passing attack. The running game has been solid behind the endless efforts of Doug Martin who has rushed for 1,370 yards, fourth most in school history.

Defensively, BSU does pretty good too, ranking 25th nationally with just 195.5 passing yards surrendered per game.

This could pretty much due in the Devils’ 11th ranked passing offense, unless Osweiler can find success with the long-ball , which seemed to work well for TCU in its victory over the Broncos.

The Broncos are 7-4 in bowl games, including last year’s 26-3 victory over Utah in Las Vegas.

Matt’s Prediction : Boise State 42, Arizona State 28 –

Look for a high scoring affair here as both teams are capable of putting points on the scoreboard, combining for 888 points during the regular season. And while the Sun Devils will try to send off Erickson with a win, the Broncos will likely ride Moore to a victory in his final game.
