Riley has averaged nine wins over a four-year span, but the failure to reach a bowl game last year, along with the losses of running back Jacquizz Rodgers to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and older brother James Rodgers as well as tight end Joe Halahuni to injury, and another tough schedule, might present even bigger challenges in avoiding a second consecutive losing season.

The team’s opener against the FCS No. 24 Sacramento State however, seems to be the only pardon as the Beavers play Wisconsin, Arizona, Arizona State and Brigham Young all within the first six week s of action.

The success of the Beavs’ season will start and rest on the shoulders of junior quarterback Ryan Katz who after turning in a limited freshman effort, should promise by passing for 2,401 yards and 18 touchdowns against 11 interceptions last season. Katz is a smart play caller and has one of the stronger arms in the PAC-12.

And while it won’t help this weekend’s efforts, having a healthy James Rodgers will go a long way in increasing Katz’s number as he continues to grow under Riley’s command. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Until then, junior back Markus Wheaton who caught a team-leading 55 passes last season, will have to shoulder the bulk of the receiving load as well as stepping up to fill the voids left by the youngest Rodgers brothers in the OSU backfield.

Defensively, the Beavers stack up well against Sacramento State, and should have no problems shutting down a mediocre Hornets rushing attack. However, they may have a bit more problems trying to contain senior quarterback Jeff Fleming who passed for a school-record 23 touchdowns in his first season as a starter.

Fleming had 2,044 yards and could have his way with the Oregon State secondary that will be senior cornerback Brandon Hardin who is out with a shoulder injury for the first few games.

That means senior safety Lance Mitchell will need to pull double duty, focusing on the Hornets’ top receiver Chase Deadder (37 catches) who emerged while averaging 21.3 yards per catch last season.

This is the second meeting between the schools., with Oregon State blowing out the Hornets 40-7 back in 2003.

NCAA Gambling Trends:

UCLA are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
Under is 17-6 in UCLA last 23 games on grass.

Over is 7-1 in HOU last 8 home games.
Over is 8-2 in HOU last 10 games on grass.

Matt’s Prediction: Oregon State 35, Sacramento State 14

Even without Rodgers Katz should have a field day against the Hornets’ defense that surrendered nearly 350 yards per game to opponents in 2010.
