Both the Hawaii Warriors and the Washington Huskies failed to prove anything to onlookers, as both looked pedestrian against lesser talent in their season openers last weekend.

The Huskies, since hiring former USC Coach Steve Sarkisian, have been an up and coming team, but this year looks to be a rebuilding period, so not a lot of people are expecting them to compete for a Pac-12 title, and I’m no different.

One thing you can count on with Washington, is that they’ll have a solid passing game, with Sarkisian coming from a quarterback-coaching position, and their Week 1 win was exactly that.

Sophomore quarterback Keith Price is Sarkisian’s new project, and their first outing of 2011 went pretty well, In the team’s 30-27 win over Eastern Washington, Price passed for three touchdowns while completing 68 percent of his passes.

Price is expected to start despite getting banged up against Eastern Washington, as is senior receiver Jermaine Kearse who is still hobbling from the ankle he sprained in last week’s contest. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Meanwhile the biggest hero of last weekend’s game was cornerback Desmond Trufant who made a game-saving interception in the end zone with 29 seconds left.

The Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week was the line bright spot on a Washington defense that allowed Eastern Washington quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell to throw for a staggering 473 yards.

While Washington barely escaped their first matchup of the season, the Hawaii Warriors looked very impressive in their Week 1 win over Colorado.

In the 34-17 victory, Hawaii showed why their offensive system is one of the most prolific in the country when quarterback Bryant Moniz tossed for a touchdown and rushed for three more.

Hawaii’s offense is sure to impress in this game, but their defense is suspect, and if Washington’s offense is even slightly better than it was a week ago, the Warriors will have to score a lot of points to win this matchup.

NCAA Gambling Trends:

HAW are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games overall.
Over is 9-3 in HAW last 12 non-conference games.
Under is 6-2-1 in HAW last 9 games on fieldturf.
Over is 7-3-1 in WASH last 11 games in September.
WASH are 19-40-2 ATS in their last 61 home games.

Matt’s Prediction: Hawaii 34, Washington 28 –

Washington’s defense did not impress in Week 1 and now face another gunslinger in Moniz. The game will be close, but the Huskies will again get peppered through the air, falling to Hawaii in a wild shootout.
