Free Picks: Arizona vs. UTSA Betting Odds & NCAA Preview

Week 2: Wildcats vs Roadrunners

The 2014 college football season is officially one week old, and Week 2 features a NCAAF betting matchup between two teams who steamrolled their season-opening opponents: UTSA Roadrunners and Arizona Wildcats. Cappers Picks provides free NCAA handicapping tips all season long.

Arizona will be the favorites in this one, as it has more talent and a deeper roster coming from the Pac-12; however, the spread is set to just a single touchdown 48 hours before kickoff. The Roadrunners looked good in Week 1, but it would be a massive disappointment for the Wildcats to drop this one so early in the season.

Wildcats

The Arizona Wildcats are the road team in this one, which is why the spread is as close as it is at this juncture. That said, they put a beatdown on UNLV last week, proving that the offense is capable of doing some serious damage against lesser-quality opponents.

En route to scoring 58 points (58-13 W), Arizona collected 434 yards through the air and 353 yards on the ground.

Those numbers were seventh and ninth in the country, respectively, and their point total was good enough for eighth, while their points allowed was strong enough for 31st.

Going up against UTSA, Arizona will be seeing a top-10 team from Week 1 in terms of points allowed. The Roadrunners gave up only seven points to Houston, which was the 10th-best mark in the country following the first week of college football.

That said, Houston didn’t have nearly the kind of firepower that this Wildcats squad does, which could be a bit of a shock for a roadrunner team coming off of a strong victory.

UTSA

The UTSA Roadrunner routed Houston 27-7 in the opening week of college football, but this time it will have to put up an even better defensive performance (in effort, not in numbers) to stymie the high-powered offense of the Arizona Wildcats.

If the Roadrunners can keep Arizona’s offense off the field, they’ll be in good shape. UTSA was only able to accumulate 121 yards last week through the air (the 109th-best mark in the nation), but it was slightly better on the ground. It collected 146 yards in the rushing game, which was the 81st-best number nationwide.

Utilizing that running game to draw out the offense will be the best tactic.

If the team successfully does that, expect a low-scoring contest, as the Wildcats’ offense won’t be given the time necessary to do what it did last week to UNLV.

That said, Arizona’s defense should be impressive as well, and chances are, Arizona’s time of possession will be reduced not because of UTSA’s methodical offense, but because of its ability to score in bunches.

CFB football handicapping trends

  • Over is 14-6 in Arizona’s last 20 games on grass
  • Arizona are 3-7 ATS vs. a team with a winning record
  • Over is 7-3 in UTSA’s last 10 non-conference games
  • UTSA is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games on grass

Week 2 College Football Betting Prediction

Expect Arizona to come out firing, but not necessarily to the tune that it did in the opener against UNLV. UTSA is confident, and that will show early in the matchup.

That said, the depth of the Wildcats’ roster should kick in, as well as the overall superior talent. This one should go to Arizona, and it should be by more than a single touchdown.

Final Week 2 Prediction: Arizona -7 (4* Free Play)
