Tulsa

Notre Dame is the second serious opponent for Tulsa to deal with in 2010; the Hurricane got decidedly steamrolled by Oklahoma State earlier in the year. Tulsa has its usual dominant offense on display; the passing attack is in the top 30 in the nation and the ground game in the top 15. Accordingly, Tulsa’s defense is nothing to write home about. The D has given up 65 and 51 points thus far and stouter efforts have come against crappy competition.

Tulsa has an excellent running/receiving threat in the pint-sized Damaris Johnson. He has nearly 300 yards so far both rushing and receiving and has the quickness to stretch a defense. Junior QB G.J. Kinne is on pace for a quietly fantastic season and perhaps the key lies in the Tulsa D wresting a couple of opportunistic turnovers from the Irish.

Notre Dame

Head coach Brian Kelly has said that Notre Dame getting into a bowl this season is vital for the progress of the team. If that is going to be the case, the Irish must nail down games like these at home, versus mid-major opponents.

Notre Dame has had a great passing attack with QB Dayne Crist, so moving the ball aerially shouldn’t be a problem. The offense also has a strong rushing duo in Armando Allen and Cierre Wood, and veteran WR Michael Floyd is putting together another impressive campaign. Notre Dame is not unlike Tulsa this week, in that the offense must prolifically out-score its opponent in order to have a shot.

The Irish’s 4-4 record is a little deceiving. ND lost consecutive close games to the two Big Ten Michigan schools, and then lost against a strong Stanford team earlier in the year. Last week’s 35-17 loss versus Navy, though, was pretty embarrassing. The Irish must atone for that performance this week if Kelly’s wishes are going to be carried out.

Betting Trends:

NOTRE DAME is 3-11 ATS (-9.1 Units) when playing with 6 or less days rest over the last 2 seasons.
NOTRE DAME is 14-29 ATS (-17.9 Units) in home games when playing against a team with a winning record since 1992.
NOTRE DAME is 2-10 ATS (-9.0 Units) as a favorite over the last 2 seasons.

The Pick: Navy has a strong scheme and a superb QB in Ricky Dobbs, but the Irish still shouldn’t have lost. Kelly will expect his kids to come out with purpose this week at home and if all goes according to plan, Notre Dame should out-offense Tulsa in South Bend.

Tulsa vs. Notre Dame Score Prediction: Tulsa 33 Notre Dame 45
