Arkansas

Celebrated quarterback Ryan Mallett (should Buffalo Bills fans already be getting stitched Mallett jerseys ordered?) is in for another profound challenge in a visit to Auburn. The Tigers are unbeaten and no one seems able to slow down Tigers pivot Cam Newton.

One encouraging stat, however, is that the Razorbacks defense is 13th in the nation in points allowed. The good teams Arkansas has faced so far – Alabama, Georgia and Texas A&M – have all scored 24 points; not water-tight but reasonably “bend-but-don’t-break.” If Pig Sooey can leave the home team with a similar output, Mallett should be able to generate enough offense himself to steal a road win.

It is no secret to opponents that Arkansas does its damage through the air. Mallett has amassed a crazy 1,748 yards thus far and the leading rusher on the season, sophomore Knile Davis, barely cracks 200 yards. The Razorbacks receiving corps is balanced, as Mallett distributes the ball around the field.

Mallett has shown he can win clutch games, on the road or at home. He is more efficient than years past and if he can stay mistake-free, there are opportunities to put points on a usually stingy Auburn team. So long as the visitors from Fayetteville can limit Newton to a good game instead of a great game, Arkansas has a real chance of stealing a win in a hostile SEC environment.

Auburn

This Saturday’s game is truly a magnificent quarterback showdown. The publicity has been ample for Mallett, yet Heisman Trophy buzz grows for Newton more with every passing week. Simply, he’s done everything for Auburn this season short of drive the team bus. Newton’s game-changing athleticism is supplemented by his 6”6, 250 lb frame. A former Florida signee, he never had a chance behind legend Tim Tebow, but Newton has proved that snookering him is nearly impossible from a defensive stand-point.

If it isn’t Newton carving a defense up on the ground, complementary running is provided by stocky freshman Michael Dyer, who has grabbed 390 yards on 78 attempts. So it isn’t a surprise what Auburn will do offensively. Yet there have been some elements of the 2010 Auburn team that have been decidedly un-Auburn like.

The Tigers are only middle-of-the-pack on D so far, which is uncharacteristic for a team that prides itself on speed, dynamic athletes and stinginess. Especially with a gifted passer like Ryan Mallett coming to town, the Tigers secondary must be extremely well-prepared. If not, expect to see Mallett put up comic book numbers. It’s not that Auburn’s defense is full of chuds; LB Craig Stevens and DE Michael Goggans, among others, are effective. But opposing teams have scored more points on Auburn than usual and the Tigers have been leaning on their QB an unusual amount to get the job done. Still, it is the win-loss column that counts and it’s difficult to criticize an unbeaten season through week seven.

The Pick:

Not to take anything away from Newton; it’s very possible that he dominates the game and snatches a win single-handedly for the home fans. Yet given Mallett’s acumen and the vulnerability of the Auburn defense to this point, look for coach Bobby Petrino’s Razorbacks to come into Auburn and pull the upset. If these two pivots are any indication, there should be a lot of scoring in this much-anticipated game. Offensive co-ordinators should be salivating and defensive co-ordinators should be sweating.
