South Carolina

The Gamecocks gave an early-morning caw to the world last week when they defeated juggernaut Alabama 35-21. The Tide were looking like no one could stop them and then coach Steve Spurrier, QB Stephen Garcia, freshman RB Marcus Lattimore and Co. proved them dead wrong. College football fans have long figured that Carolina was a program on its way back to prominence; some (author included) just didn’t figure it would happen this soon.

The successes of Garcia and Lattimore have been talked about, but sophomore WR Alshon Jeffery had a huge game against ’Bama and is a vital cog of the attack. In fact, Jeffery must like the state of Alabama, because before his seven receptions for 127 yards and two scores last week, he racked up eight grabs for a fat 192 yards at two TDs at Auburn. If Jeffery keeps the pace up, the Gamecocks will go into the teeth of the regular season with an excellent offensive trio.

Spurrier’s defense hasn’t been a problem. No team has exceeded 30 points against the Gamecocks and the D held Alabama and its troupe of Heisman candidates to only 21 points. Thus far South Carolina hasn’t been top of the class in any one category, but it has done enough in each segment of the game to be a serious conference contender. A loss to Auburn two weeks ago is the only blemish on Carolina’s radar and no one’s been able to stop Auburn’s Cam Newton.

Kentucky

The expectations are a bit more modest for the home side. With the exception of one pounding at the hands of Florida in The Swamp earlier in the season, Kentucky competes in every game. This is best evidenced by Auburn narrowly escaping with a three-point win last week.

Scoring points hasn’t been a problem for UK, but keeping opponents off the scoreboard certainly has. Quarterback Mike Hartline is throwing for yards, but coming in at 91st in the nation in scoring defense is just not going to cut it in the SEC. Extrapolating from the stats, freshman phenom Lattimore should have a big day in Commonwealth Stadium and Garcia should be able to operate consequence-free.

If Hartline and RB Derrick Locke do their thing and the maligned defense steps up with a season-defining performance, Kentucky might send South Carolina home with two losses. Otherwise, Wildcat fans may be crying into their beers rather than celebratory drinking.

The Pick:

The Wildcats should score a few points, but their secondary double-teaming Jeffery should result in open looks for other Gamecocks and young RB Lattimore has burst onto the scene in 2010. All told, Hartline will probably make a mistake or two, and the SC attack has been too solid to bumble around with. Count on South Carolina going back to Columbia victorious.
