Auburn

Under transfer quarterback Cam Newton, the Tigers have earned an unbeaten record, despite having some close calls. The Tigers have beaten South Carolina, Clemson and Mississippi State by a touchdown or less. But it’s the win ledger that counts, and coach Gene Chizik’s kids have excelled to the letter of the law in that regard.

Auburn ranks 20th in the nation in points for and have scored 87 points in the past two weeks. Getting in the end zone against a porous Kentucky team shouldn’t be a problem. Newton has performed thus far like a lankier, poor man’s Denard Robinson, nearly throwing for 1,000 yards and rushing for 500. He leads his team in both categories and has put 17 TDs in the mix as well.

The Auburn defense hasn’t been quite as stifling as it’s built its reputation on, but with the dynamic Newton leading the team, it’s done enough to be successful. The Tigers are heading into the teeth of their in-conference schedule, so they would do well to (a) not overlook the Wildcats, a team that can put up points themselves; and (b) hone their game and focus on defensive domination so they’ll be prepared to face the likes of Arkansas, LSU and Alabama.

Kentucky

The Team That Makes Ashley Judd Hot and Bothered (too bad it doesn’t have a better ring to it) has done a valiant job in past years staying competitive in a cut-throat conference. But so far  in 2010, the only convincing victories Kentucky has grabbed have been against doormats Western Kentucky and Akron. The ’Cats got steamrolled by Florida a couple weeks ago and Auburn will more closely resemble the Gators than the WKU Hilltoppers.

To its credit, Kentucky has a great trio of offensive production in QB Mike Hartline, RB Derrick Locke and WR/do-everything guy Randall Cobb. The Wildcats are just behind Auburn – 21st in the country – in points for and if their defense weren’t Swiss cheese they’d be far more intimidating to their SEC foes.

In order to upset Auburn at home, Kentucky must set realistic goals. They won’t keep Newton and Co. off the scoreboard, but if UK can generate turnovers and have an efficient yet high-octane effort from the Offense Trio while keeping Hartline upright, they could really bring a fight to the Tigers.

The Pick:

Kentucky will probably put some points up in its own right, but Newton has been just too deadly against better teams than Kentucky for him – and visiting Auburn – to be thwarted. Look for another pseudo-Heisman game out of Newton as his Tigers leave Lexington with another win.

Alabama vs South Carolina Gambling Trends:

The total has gone UNDER in 8 of Auburn’s last 11 games on the road
Auburn is 2-7 SU in its last 9 games on the road
Auburn is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
Auburn is 2-8 ATS in its last 10 games on the road
Kentucky is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games at home

Auburn vs. Kentucky Score Prediction: Auburn 34, Kentucky 24
