Clemson

The Tigers are coming off two excruciating losses against ranked foes Auburn and Miami in consecutive weeks. They were both tilts that Clemson could have won if there were some slightly different breaks in the Tigers’ favor. Multi-talented Clemson quarterback Kyle Parker has shown a lot of moxie and leadership despite getting banged up in the Auburn game. Still, Clemson cruised to a pair of easy wins to start the 2010 campaign and it’s conceivable to think that the injuries sustained by Parker have hampered him.

As usual, the Tigers have been capable in the ground game, averaging almost 202 rush yards/game. Andre Ellington is averaging seven yards a tote and has seven TDs to go with that. Beefier Jamie Harper offers a different look to frustrate defenses. The Tigers offensive line has been spotty despite having a couple decent players and importance of protecting Parker now is more crucial than ever.

Defensively, Clemson has its usual stable of dynamic athletes. The efforts are led by the electric play of DB DeAndre McDaniel. He flies all over the field hitting and making plays on the ball.

Despite the talent that is ever-present on coach Dabo Swinney’s roster, the call for righting the ship in conference play is loud and clear for the Clemson faithful. The Tar Heels represent a team Clemson can beat if they get a few breaks and can supplement the run with safe play from a healthier Kyle Parker.

North Carolina

Butch Davis’s team had to suffer through a difficult beginning of the season, facing LSU, Georgia Tech and Rutgers in the first three weeks. The Heels lost their first two games to LSU and Tech, but the defensive talent on UNC is well-publicized and the players will be turned loose at home against Clemson this week. Yet, the Heels narrowly escaped Rutgers 17-13 in Week 3 and had a somewhat redeeming performance last week versus East Carolina.

Quarterback T.J. Yates has been effective passing the ball, racking up over 1,000 yards and seven majors thus far. The running game has been average and the team defense is only ranked 55th in the nation, not nearly as good as UNC shows on paper. Studs like Bruce Carter, Quan Sturdivant and Marvin Austin really need to step up and take control of the ACC conference slate.

Carolina can build momentum in consecutive weeks by beating Clemson at home and then travelling to Charlottesville, Virginia for a manageable game against the Cavaliers next week. The daunting tests then resume later in the month when the Heels travel to Coral Gables to clash with Miami.

The Pick:

With both squads currently sitting at 2-2, this is an intrinsic game for both sides. With a win, either team has the talent to re-focus on a successful season and a strong conference showing. With a loss, there will be considerable deflation for the 2010 season for two teams with expectations – particularly for the rabid Clemson fans. I like Clemson’s McDaniel to torment Yates’s passing lanes and I like Clemson taking this game on the road.

Clemson vs UNC Gambling Trends:
