Florida State

The ’Noles had an embarrassing performance against Oklahoma a few weeks back, but atoned for that sloppiness with convincing victories against BYU, Wake Forest and Virginia. However, this week FSU goes into the belly of not only a bitter rival, but a resurgent power that gave Ohio State a game and crushed Big East “power” Pittsburgh.

To head back to Tallahassee victorious, Florida State needs maximum return out of QB Christian Ponder. Ponder has all the tools to be one of the best QBs in the ACC, yet he struggled against the Sooners and has battled injuries. If he’s at the top of his game, the Seminoles are very competitive indeed. In addition, RB Jermaine Thomas has had a quietly strong season thus far, but needs his best performance to date for offensive balance. The Seminoles’ offensive line is extremely talented and can plow the lanes; FSU will show up on the scoreboard if the skill players are up for this game.

Defensively, FSU should be looking for LB Nigel Bradham and DE Markus White to lead the charge. Hurricanes pivot Jacory Harris has been prone to turnovers thus far in 2010; ’Noles defenders have the kind of range and ball skills to capitalize on this trend.

Miami

The only thing that has slowed junior QB Harris is the turnovers. He is closing in on 900 yards passing through four games, but has already thrown eight picks. Along with only a 57% completion percentage, Harris must get less sloppy for the Hurricanes to reach their potential. Miami has a great stable on receivers to make Harris’s job easier – he shouldn’t have to force anything and needs to learn this.

‘The U’ certainly has other dimensions, though, as the defense ranks in the Top 20 in points against. Local products like DL Marcus Forston and DB Brandon Harris are next-level players who put pressure on opponents’ skill positions. The ’Canes will surely be fired up to beat hated FSU at home and will be their aggressive selves. Players like Ray Ray Armstrong, a 6”4, 220 lb defensive back, typify coach Randy Shannon’s treasure trove of big, rangy athletic monsters in Miami’s own backyard.

Miami certainly has all the supplementary pieces to be a top-tier team. What sticks out from QB Harris’s performances so far are his four INTs in Columbus against the Buckeyes. In 2010, he needs to prove that on the biggest stage, he’s a gutsy, steely leader and not merely a kid with a good arm.

The Pick: This should be an excellent game, especially if the Seminoles continue to build on the momentum they’ve generated in the weeks following the loss to the Sooners. Both quarterbacks have the talent to put up a Heisman-like performance; if this happens simultaneously, this could be one of the games of the season. Look for the Miami defense to force FSU into mistakes and look for the Hurricanes to secure a nerve-wracking win in this classic rivalry game.
