Nevada

Last week, the Wolf Pack did what many figured was unthinkable: knocked off Boise State, the mighty WAC outfit. Broncos’ southpaw pivot Kellen Moore’s Heisman hopes took a nosedive and one of the great non-AQ FBS teams was knocked from its pedestal. Not bad for a Saturday’s work for Nevada.

This week’s match-up against Louisiana Tech on the road is somewhat anti-climactic, but Nevada must still take care that it doesn’t take the win for granted. The job falls to star senior QB Colin Kaepernick to keep his troops focused. The former WAC Offensive Player of the Year threw for 259 yards, one TD and one pick to go with 45 rushing yards and another score in the Boise upset. He’s thrown for an efficient 20-7 ratio and just under 65% completion this season – he makes Nevada’s offense go and infuses it with both veteran savvy and a nose for running the ball.

Further encouragement for the Wolf Pack should be the ability for teams to exploit Tech’s defense in 2010. The Bulldogs give up over 30 points per game and though they are fighting for their post-season lives, they’re a far easier opponent than Boise.

Nevada’s defense itself is not watertight, but Kaepernick and his rushing attack has gouged opponents all season. At the end of the weekend we should be adding Louisiana Tech to that list.

Louisiana Tech

At 5-6, Tech needs to beat the visiting Wolf Pack to become bowl eligible. The Bulldogs have duked out high-scoring affairs for the majority of the 2010 campaign; it should be no different versus Nevada. If Tech’s defense can’t find an immediate renaissance, though, bowl prospects look bleak.

The A-1 offensive contributor for Tech is RB Lennon Creer. The former Tennessee recruit has 1,132 yards and 11 majors this season – he registers the lion’s share of what is the 36th-best rush attack in the country. Creer is coming off a 30-carry, 252 yard bell-cow performance in a victory against San Jose State last week. Senior QB Ross Jenkins doesn’t need to do too much and provided he doesn’t turn the ball over, the Bulldogs should put up a chunk of points. A prolific attack is a must against Nevada, because the Wolf Pack likely will score a ton and control possession.

The Pick: Tech has shown offensive effectiveness quite often, but they don’t do it as well as Nevada. Nevada is on the road on a long road trip and there is always the possibility Tech catches the Wolf Pack napping after such a pivotal win against Boise, but it all still seems like a profound long shot for the home side.

Score Prediction: Nevada 49 Louisiana Tech 30
