UNLV

In a strong Mountain West Conference, it’s been a tough year for the Rebels. They’ve proven to have the defense of a Pop Warner team (114th in the nation allowing 38 points per) and a largely impotent offense as well.

Any team with a semblance of talent (and some teams without entirely) have pounded UNLV this year. The Rebels barely have a runner that’s cracked 500 yards and the most dangerous offensive player is likely junior WR Phillip Payne, who still only has amassed 604 yards and four majors.

There are a lot of top-tier mid-majors in the MWC that the Rebels can’t run with – TCU, Utah and Brigham Young as examples – and UNLV also drew Wisconsin out-of-conference.  Still, there hasn’t been a whole lot to distract Nevadans from gambling in Sin City this season. Furthermore, there probably isn’t a whole lot of incentive for the sparse Rebels fans to stay up late and watch their troops get shellacked by a high-flying Hawaii outfit.

Hawaii

The Warriors’ frenetic passing game has paid pretty strong dividends this season – Hawaii’s only slip-ups have come against big ticket teams like Southern Cal, Colorado and Boise State. The Boise game is the only blemish on Hawaii’s conference slate in the WAC.

The relentless aerial fest – Hawaii is first in the nation in passing with nearly 385 yards per game – is operated through junior QB Bryant Moniz. The native Hawaiian has 4,249 yards and 32 scores on the campaign, video game numbers indeed. Those familiar with Hawaii’s style know that passing has always been central, but different from past years the Warriors also boast a 1,000+ yard rusher in 2010 in senior Alex Green. Granted, a good bulk of that total came in a ridiculous 19-carry, 327-yard explosion versus New Mexico State last week, but impressive nonetheless.

UNLV hasn’t been effective stopping anyone this season and Hawaii should exploit that to the umpteenth-extent. Look for a barnburner on the island this weekend, and a largely one-sided one at that.

The Pick: It would basically take a miracle for UNLV to come away from the flight over the Pacific with a victory. Moniz and his offense is just too potent and the Rebels “D” is just too pathetic. This won’t be remotely close and though the spread is huge, it is justified.

Score Prediction: UNLV 10 Hawaii 49
